Anything Altec Lansing, if he cares about sound quality, and you need
something that won't bankrupt you. Find one with a remote that includes at
least on/off, volume and bass level. -Dave

While you can read reviews until the sun comes up, nothing
compares to visiting a big box store with some of this stuff
on display. I saw plenty of stuff I would not care to buy, when
I was looking for something as part of a gift a couple
years ago. At least you know what they sound like, if you try
them in a store. That avoids "lame purchase syndrome" :-)

Your ears can get tired, from trying too many of these
systems in one day, so stretch your trials over a couple
sessions.

I've got an old Soundblaster Live! card, and I rigged up a means of
piping it into my cheap Panasonic component system. It really sounds
pretty good, a lot better than anything I've ever been able to get out
of a sound card alone. But I've never played with new high-end sound
cards. AC97, which comes on lots of boards, is not very good, and it
just gets worse if it goes into an amplifier.

So, maybe get him a good sound card if he doesn't have one already but
does have a decent stereo system.

Well then, what's the budget?

I like these.

They seem at the top of the $50 mark. They have one of those detached
volume knobs that sits on your desk which also has an earphone jack in it.
That little piece of hardware is worth it's weight in gold, especially if
you often switch to headphones and enjoy having a little bit more cord.

Best quality for price, IMO.

I have the Creative LAbs Inspire T2900 speakers so I'm not sure how
different the T3000 is but as far as the T2900 goes I would never
recommend them if your main reason for purchasing them is to listen to
music. They're fine for gaming though. The problem is the bass is so
pronounced that turning the bass control higher than one third of the
way up makes the sound too boomy. The high frequencies are okay but
basically there's no midrange.

That's the problem alright. I just looked through some of the setups.
These expensive PC speakers are made for kiddies who assume that if
the bass vibrates everything in the room, it must be really good
sound.

But, I have yet to see a sound card that has more than a 5 or 10 watt
amplifier. I suppose the new ones may have good amplifiers, but then
they would have to be be hot as hell, too, with a big heat sink.

I have found that by running my sound out to a component stereo, while
also piping the sound to my cheap Sound Mate Quickshot PC speakers, I
create a nice listening space for everything from gunge rock to Maria
Callas.

The nephew might just want bragging rights, in which case he would
value either a nifty sound card (best choice if he doesn't have one)
or else a pair of shiny, gimmicky speakers with a built-in bass
amplifier to massage his kidneys. Probably he would like performance
as well, in which case the uncle would do well to check out some
audiophile pages.

Ok. For around that price, I would pick the Creative I-trigue 3300,
about $56 shipped from pagecomputers.com. I think it's a closeout item.
I buy toner from them all the time.

Yeah, but no computer speakers around $50 are *great* for music, but all of
them will be better than what came with your computer. I like them compared
to what I've heard in that price range, and I listen to a lot of different
setups. The ideal solution is hooking the computer up the home stereo. I
also have that setup in the other room.

The problem isn't so much the speaker design as it is the amplifier. The
subwoofer is usually the only powered part with computer speakers.
Everything else falls under 10 watts. What can you do with 10 watts? Not
much.

Maybe the kid already has a great stereo, in which case a long cable might
be the way to go gift-wise.

Sounds as if this nephew is picky about sound...
So would he like YOU to determin HIS speakers ?
Or worse: US (usenet ppl) ?

It's risky to intrude on his turf, it seems...
