I have the Creative LAbs Inspire T2900 speakers so I'm not sure how
different the T3000 is but as far as the T2900 goes I would never
recommend them if your main reason for purchasing them is to listen to
music. They're fine for gaming though. The problem is the bass is so
pronounced that turning the bass control higher than one third of the
way up makes the sound too boomy. The high frequencies are okay but
basically there's no midrange.
That's the problem alright. I just looked through some of the setups.
These expensive PC speakers are made for kiddies who assume that if
the bass vibrates everything in the room, it must be really good
sound.
But, I have yet to see a sound card that has more than a 5 or 10 watt
amplifier. I suppose the new ones may have good amplifiers, but then
they would have to be be hot as hell, too, with a big heat sink.
I have found that by running my sound out to a component stereo, while
also piping the sound to my cheap Sound Mate Quickshot PC speakers, I
create a nice listening space for everything from gunge rock to Maria
Callas.
The nephew might just want bragging rights, in which case he would
value either a nifty sound card (best choice if he doesn't have one)
or else a pair of shiny, gimmicky speakers with a built-in bass
amplifier to massage his kidneys. Probably he would like performance
as well, in which case the uncle would do well to check out some
audiophile pages.
