Posting for a friend.

He forgot the password on his XP-Pro machine that expired.
Machine has been on continuously for the past 6 months - just rebooted
During reboot he was informed that the password expired and he doesn't remember it so that it can be changed.

There was only 1 administrator account setup and 3 user accounts.

The user accounts still work and can boot the system.

I did a quick scan of goggle and the basic answer seems to be that you need access to an administrator account in order to reset another administrator account. Without that - a new install of XP is required.

I also note that there are several 3rd party programs that claim to break missing passwords - but don't want to spend $200.

I see that you can boot using a Windows 2000 cd and activate the windows recovery counsel - but unsure if this will allow the password to be reset...

Might anyone know of another way to solve this problem (perhaps in safe mode)?

Thanks -
