To make a long story as short as possible..! Last night McAfee VS thought I
had a worm W32/GAOBOT.worm.gen.e and wiped out my Registry Mechanic
completely (paid version) and the latest update from SpywareBlaster -
saying they were worms (NOT)!!! I've got both McAfee and Winguides
thinking about the next step.
I can't re-install Reg. Mechanic - it keeps saying "C:\Program
Files\Registry Mechanic\RegMech.exe, An error has occurred while trying to
rename a file in destination directory, move file failed code 5, access
denied."
I've done a safe boot with sys. restore off, and run 6 different scans - all
negative. I also removed all registry entries for Winguides but it still
gives the same error response when I try to re-install.
Any ideas guys and gals??

Thanks Haus, that was one of about 8 tools I already used. I have no
infection, but I DO have a screwed up registry entry somewhere which wont
allow me to re-install reg. mechanic!

P.S. I may have to do a repair install. That's my last resort. I have an
OEM version but the last time I did that it did give the upgrade option.

Hello
I'm already bald, so no risk of that!!!!!!!! LOL Thanks<

LOL.....:)

If you have a XP cd (not restore disks) doing a repair (not upgrade) should
leave all files & folders intact, it will just repair the problem.

Boot from the cd, it will load some files the at the first screen choose
Enter, then F8 to accept the license, then choose the partition you wish to
repair and R for repair.

It has been a while, don't think I left out any steps.

a) I don't know how to boot from the disc...that involves messing with BIOS
and I'm not going there.
b) I installed a registry repair tool which, although now uninstalled is
showing an icon on my taskbar which I can't "exit" or remove...any
suggestions?

To boot from the cd, put the cd in the ROM drive and turn the computer off
then start the computer if the ROM drive is set in the BIOS to boot before
the HDD then there will be no need to enter the BIOS, very few computers are
set to boot the HDD before the ROM drive (mostly home built puters)

The BIOS is easy to deal with, computer manufactures are different on
entering, but once you get in use the arrow keys to move around and the +
& - to change the options. After making changes always Exit Saving Changes.

There is also an option to Set the Defaults then Exit Saving Changes this
will return the BIOS to factory settings.

I have never used Registry Mec. so really this about all the information I
can offer.

Sorry

I tried that.. the last time I tried to boot from the CD it chose the HD
first. I haven't the faintest idea how to cook the BIOS and I don't want
to go there as the PC is under warranty. I am too embarrassed though to go
back for a reinstall so soon after the last one. 2 weeks ago I got a bad
Trojan which literally crashed the PC, despite all the protection I'm
supposed to have. (Now two less as even Spyware Blaster has gone kaput and
it too will not reinstall.)

Thanks for the help.. The problem has been solved... McAfee pout out a new
update to correct the false Virus alert and all is now back to normal.
Considering I did a repair reinstallation of Windows as well... ah well,
maybe that cleaned out some garbage too.
