Help Lost Files

Prior to coming home from Vacation, I showed all my pictures taken
while on vacation in Hawaii to my daughter from my laptop. I had
previously stored them there from my Digital Camera. When I returned
home the next day, the file folder HAWAII was not on the hard drive.
I looked in the recycle bin to see if it had been deleted. It was not
there. There was one picture there that I had deleted. I restored it
from the recycle bin and it came back to the hard drive in a folder
called HAWAII. That's where it was when I deleted it. The other
pictures are not there.

I hesitate to do anything on the laptop because the picture files
would be written over if they can be recovered. My questions are:

1. Will a system restore to an earlier date do the trick? If not,
will it over write where the missing pictures are?

2. Should I look for restoration software to undelete files?

Any help would be appreciated. There are about 200 pictures that I
treasure there.

Yes, they well might be if they have been deleted.

My questions are:

1. Will a system restore to an earlier date do the trick?

No. System restore restores the system only, and does nothing for
your data files.

If not,
will it over write where the missing pictures are?

It might. Don't even consider doing a System restore, since it
can't possibly help you.

2. Should I look for restoration software to undelete files?

It's very hard to say, since you haven't said anything that
suggests that the files were deleted. If you do get such
software, download it on another computer and bring it to to
yours on a diskette or CD to try.

Have you tried searching for the files by name? Perhaps they are
still there, just not in the folder you thought they were in.
Also try a search for Hawaii. Perhaps the folder is there, but
not where you thought it was.

What about the media in the camera? Did you delete the files from
there? If so, have you reused the media yet? If not, you may be
able to recover them with undelete software, which can work on
the camera media just as it does on a hard drive. I've
successfully undeleted pictures from camera media with this
program: http://www3.telus.net/mikebike/RESTORATION.html

Thanks for a very good input.

I used the laptop to demonstrate the pictures and now feel there were
about 300 on it the night before I left california. I shut down the
notebook normally. When I got home and tried to bring up the pics, I
found they were no longer there nor the folder called hawaii. I went
to the re-cycle bin and found one pic that I had deleted. When I
restore that pic... It created a folder it was originally in....
Hawaii. That may have been a mistake. I went to properties to make
sure that it wasn't hidden files or read only.

The camera card had been erased when I put the pics on the notebook,
to make room for more pics.

I downloaded a freebie to restore lost files. No joy. I paid for a
version 3.8 of Recover my Files which had good reviews in google. No
joy there. It did find my last pictures that had been deleted on
the camera card. I was able to restore those. I'm still looking for
the first 250 pics I took on my Hawaii Vacation.

Strange...I never deleted the folder. I've done a search for it and
the Pics... Just in case the folder was moved inside another by
mistake. My memories are gone!

You're welcome. Glad to help.

I understand. I had a similar problem this past spring. I lost
the pictures I took on a trip to France. In my case, the hard
drive on my laptop failed catastrophically. I was able to
undelete those left on the camera's media, and fortunately I had
made a CD for someone else of some of the first pictures I had
taken, and he made a copy for me. I got back about 700 pictures,
but I ended up losing some 400 or so.

I finally got my pics restored... I downloaded and purchased Recover
my Lost files for $69.00. I used an external USB hard drive to
recover them so as not to overwrite any files on the notebook.

Later just to prove or disprove a theory, I used system restore to an
earlier date when the files were on the hard drive. Presto... There
they were inside the original folder labled Hawaii. I had been told
that system restore wouldn't work with any deleted files. I never
deleted them. They were lost!! Anyway, if I had tried that first, I
may have saved the 69 bucks.

Thanx for all the help.

I recommend that you use DataRecoveryWizard to recover your data.
The software provides very useful functions for data recovery:
DeleteRecovery, FormatRecovery, AdvancedRecovery, RawRecovery.

This program is an efficient disk recovery software providing
you a complete answer to data loss.

First thing I recommend you download the demo version of
DataRecoveryWizard. (http://www.easeus.com/download.htm)

Run the program and select the recovery mode "DeletedRecovery",
or "FormatRecovery", or "AdvancedRecovery".
