Running Win2000 SP3...

I've got a re-occuring problem of help links bringing up error
messages. The green definition links, the Related Topics links and
the Open XXX shortcuts in HTML help files all bring up errors.

The last thing I installed was the Platform SDK files, but I have
since then been shutting down things in Internet Explorer to help
avoid dowloading anything. My goal was to shutdown everything
for the Internet zone and only add a few sites to the Trusted zone.

If those changes caused it, I am unable to find the right combination
to restore the help files (Defaults didn't do it either).

Some time ago I read about some sort of problem with ShowWindow
and wonder if that maybe what I am seeing. In any case, has anyone
one else already seen and resolved this issue?

You may be able to fix this problem by applying Microsoft Critical
Update 811630, which is available from:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=811630

This will upgrade the components used to view HTML Help files.

If you continue to have problems then you could try the following:

1) Delete the file hh.dat, which you should find in the following
subdirectory:

\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\HTML Help

This is a database file that saves such session information as the
window position and favorites for the HTML Help viewer. If the file
has been corrupted then .chm files may behave erratically. Windows
will automatically re-create the file when you next open any .chm
file.

2) Empty your Temporary Internet Files (TIF) directory. A full TIF
directory can cause HTML Help files to misbehave.

3) Use MJ's Help Diagnostics to check that the HTML Help viewer
components are properly installed and registered on your machine.
