Anyone know how I can FORCE a full reinstall (or repair) of IE6 on aWindows
2000 PC? I have a badly corrupted copy of Internet Explorer (*Problems and
explanation below in case its of further use) on a Windows 2000 PC. Windows
2000 doesn't offer the repair option for IE by default but I found a
suggestion to use command line "rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE
Uninstall Log.Txt". Tried that and it seemed to work as it offered the
"Repair" dialogue, but when I followed it through it just told me IE could
not be repaired (log showed huge list of faults) and said I must reinstall
Internet Explorer. Have tried running the ie6setup.exe file (from both the
Microsoft site and from a copy on a magazine disc) but in both cases it
runs, shows it as installing IE6, but that process takes about 3
seconds(??!!) and it then says restart your PC to complete the
installation. Of course when I restart the PC nothing has changed so the
reinstall clearly isn't working properly. Any suggestions as to what else I
can try to fix my badly corrupted copy of IE?
* Current problems:
1. Cant open Outlook Express. Returns error message "Outlook Express could
not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be loaded".
2. Internet Explorer works but it has following problems:
2.1 If I go to Windows Update site, and click on the link "Scan for
updates" absolutely nothing happens so I think there's some problems with
javascript or similar.
2.2 Does not let me copy text from web pages.
2.3 Does not let me enter data into fields in web page forms and some
drop-down lists are blank.
3. Appears the IE corruption effects other parts of Windows, as if I now go
to Add/Remove programs the list it now displays only shows the program
icons. The names of the installed programms are not shown.
* Background to how PC got in this state:
At the weekend the Windows Update automated service highlighted I had
updates ready to install. As usual I just OK'd that, without checking what
they were. When it said I needed to restart PC to complete the updates, as
I was done for the night, I just cancelled the restart and instead shut it
down. On restarting PC following morning I at first got a "hard disk error"
message!! Tried rebooting again - hard disk error message didn't come up,
but everytime it got past the screen with the starting Windows 2000 progress
bar, the PC would just reboot itself. Tried starting windows 2000 in safe
mode, and using last known good config etc., but it still just rebooted
evertime at same point. Eventually I got it to successfully boot up by
booting up from the Windows 2000 CD and choosing the Repair option. Things
seemed to be OK except I found it needed my Office CD to be inserted when I
tried to run certain office programs, but much worse was I then found that
Outlook Express wouldn't open. It returned error message "Outlook Express
could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be loaded". Searched web for
fixes relating to that, but none seemed relevant as they referred to where
you'd replaced IE with an older version. The suggested fixes to look for in
the registry also weren't applicable as my registry settings were different
from what they said I'd find if this was the problem. On checking Help -
About Internet Explorer it was still showing version 6.0.2800.1106IS SP1...,
and IE was working fine. I was desperate to get Outlook Express working
though, and knowing it's so tied in with the browser, and as Windows 2000
doesn't offer you the repair option for IE, I however decided to try
uninstalling copy of IE using the Add/Remove programs option. Big mistake
(!!) as I now have a corrupt copy of IE with the faults listed above, and
just cant manage to fix it by using the normal means of repair or trying to
reinstall it!
Help me please somebody!!
