My in-laws are trying to install software for an el cheapo Lexmark Z23
inkjet printer they bought at Target. Nevermind the quality. I told them I'd
try to help. It seems the error message that keeps popping up is the same.
They get one of the following, in some random fashion:

"Error copying file lexstart.ex_"
or...
"Error copying file lexpps.ex_"
or
"Error copying file lexbces.ex_"

....and the installation fails.

Not always sure which files come up at which time but they claim one of the
3 messages has popped during each of the install attempts they have made.
Apparently not all 3 at the same time during the same inatallation.

I have instructed them to forgo the installation CD ROM and had them
download the drivers from the Lexmark.com website. They get the same error
messages.

Any help appreciated (I know, I know, get them a real printer. That's not
possible right now).

Thanks

It turns out they were using a USB cable for the printer. I had them unplug
it from the PC, reboot, install the software, and then plug the USB when the
installation program asked for it. It worked.

Thanks anyway!

Yeah, that's a quirk of USB -- and a stupid one, since we have been told to
Plug In The Device Before Powering Up ever since we started playing with
these machines.

Yah exactly. My canon 850 wouldnt install properly. I thought I would
follow the instructions but it never installed properly. I just
loaded the drivers first, rebooted then plugged in the printer and
voila..

Stupid me for following directions.

What's funny is that afterward I had them check their instruction manual and
it had them plug in the device *first* before installing the software. The
Lexmark support webpage, however, instructed the opposite: install software
first, then plug it in.

I have found that with just about anything anymore, install drivers THEN
hardware. Used to be just the opposite not even a few years ago.
