Help index: blank column in XP SP2

I have two 'blank screen problems' in XP Home SP2:

1. Upon selecting 'System management' in Control Panel, a blank screen
appears.

2. Upon selecting 'Index' in 'Help', a lefthand column with an
alphabetical index should appear.
However, the column remains blank, with a little red cross in a
square.

Does anybody know solutions?

Your suggestion obviously pertains to my 2nd problem: the blank help
index.

Maybe I should have mentioned that, but I had already found, and
tried, that one, although I have to say that I have some problem
reading it.

It looks like it consists of an 'original' part(a pre-SP2 part) , that
starts with 'When you click....'. to which later the top part is added
for systems with SP2.

Now, my computer does have SP2, so the top part should apply, I guess.

Well, I did not knowingly and purposely set the 'Kill-bit', because I
simply don't know what it is all about.

Therefore I jumped to the last sentence (I think) of the part that
pertains to SP2, i.e.
"If the above does not apply in your case, try registering the
hhcttrl.ocx file".

I did that the way I found further down, by going to Start,Run, and
typing 'regsvr32 hhctrl.ocx"

It reported that registering was successful.

The problem, however, was not solved.

Was my interpretation correct?
Or should I have done something else?

I take it that you do not have a suggestion for the problem I listed
as 1st ?

If it helps any I can't fix the Index problem in Help and Support either and
I do not have SP2.
