Can anybody help a newbie, to work out how to upgrade my Compaq
Presario desktop 5221 CPU? I have replaced the AMD 380 mhz CPU with a
500mhz but the computer still recognises it as a 380!

The Bios is of no help, so are there any jumpers that need to be
changed.

Also what is the Max amount of RAM the computer will take and which
kind.

TIA

Yes, typically a super 7 board needs jumpers changed for
different CPU (speed). If you can't find the manual for the
board then carefully examine the board's silkscreening with
a flashlight as the jumper settings may be marked, though
not right next to the jumpers, possibly somewhere else on
the board were there was more space.

I'm suspecting the current CPU uses 4 x 95 so you'd need
change both the multiplier jumper(s) from 4X to 5X, and FSB
from 95 to 100.

"Probably" 384MB of PC100, or perhaps 256MB if there are
only two slots. I'm not certain of it though, see the
memory advisor at http://www.crucial.com
