Control Panel
Classic View
Sounds and Audio Devices applet
Sounds tab
Drop down menu set to Windows Default
Click OK

very first thing which ever made me feel that a profession might be
made out of what had up to that time been the merest hobby."

Well, did you make the changes and set it back to the Windows default? Did
the option stick? After you set it back did you open it again (the sounds
applet from the control panel) and was it set on default? Was it already set
on default?

I would try adding on manually - like the startup wav file and rebooting to
see if it sticks. If it does you may have to go ahead and make your own
custom sound settings by putting the correct sounds (or any you happen to
feel interested in) into the drop down menu box for each of the events in
question. However, a restore to a date/time prior to this change might be
effective as well.
