How can I print file names or lists within a folder without printing the entire file? I have looked everywhere I can think of and cannot find out how to do this. If I could find some help with this, I would be very grateful. Thank you.

A bit "off topic", but none-the-less ...

Go to a command prompt (some call it DOS but purists will be quick to
tell you it isn't). Go to the folder of interest. Use the dir command
to create a list of files and direct the output of that command to
another file, e.g.

cd folder_of_interest
dir > c:\temp\filelist.txt

In Word, open this file you created, format (if necessary), and print.

There's a useful tool linked from the download page of my web site -
Printfolders - that does this, and is so successful that assorted
workarounds are not worth the trouble.

Thank you for such a quick reply. I am having trouble getting this to work. This file is on a shared drive. I can change to the drive I want, but it does not allow me to locate the file. I get the messeage that the system cannont find the path specified. What am I doing wrong? I will try to explain the problem as best as I can. I go into word, open my folder and within that folder there are maybe 300 files. I want to print what I have named those 300 files and not the content in these files. Could you please explain what I might be doing wrong.

thank you

I was able to download your program, but am unable to figure out how to print. I read the readme file, but came up with nothing. Any info would help.

Just use Word to edit out the information you don't want printed.

The utility is either an application (*.exe) or a macro. In either case, it
needs to be installed, not opened in Word. See

Perhaps my idea of simple and yours do not coincide :)

The download is a zipped file, which contains a small exe file called
printfolders.exe. If you extract the file to your hard disc and double click
it from Windows Explorer, it will install the utility on your system. The
application itself, when run, produces a small Explorer type window. You can
select the folder you are interested in in that window, check off the parts
you want to print with the boxes alongside, and select a name and location
for the resulting file in the box below. Press go and the file will be
written. This is a TXT file which you can open in Word and print from there.

Remember: you can select an block of text, e.g. all the file dates,
file sizes, etc. on the left side of each line of text by pressing the
ALT key while swiping the mouse. This should make it easy to remove the
unneeded information.
