I had a a corrupted system file, so I installed another version of XP Home on
my machine. I went back to my original XP installation and went through a
"repair".
Now, I can get into the newer XP install, but the first XP install gives
this message upon logon:

"Cannot login Domain Name either does not exist or cannot be contacted."

It never used to ask me for my name, now it asks for a password.
I found that the "repair" changed my Computer Name from IBM12370 to my last
name.
How can I find out what the original name of my computer was, change it
back, so that when I reboot into my original XP install, I can get into it? I
tried Safe Mode and it goes through the same thing. Doing another XP install
Repair doesn't fix anything...I'm worried about doing a full re-install that
it may overwrite important files.
thanks,

What repair did you do?? To be honest the "Cannot login Domain Name either
does not exist or cannot be contacted " tells me that your original install
must be pretty messed because an XP Home computer can not be a member of a
domain. You could try using the option for last known good configuration
when you see the alternate startup menu that you use to access Safe Mode but
I tend to doubt it would work but always worth a try in such a situation.
Your computer name should not be relevant to your problem. Since you can
boot into another operating system that works I would backup all your
important data files including your user profile under documents and
settings to cdrom/DVDs and do a clean install. If an upgrade/repair install
does not fix the problem then it is pretty serious and doubtful you could
otherwise repair it. FYI problems with system files can usually be fixed by
using System File Checker as in sfc /scannow. --- Steve
