Ok--a very well-meaning (but clearly insane) friend gave me his old ('old' as
in 'a couple months') computer (the one I'm using right now). It had vista
beta version on it when he gave it to me. Now it says "Ultimate." Did it
automatically upgrade? Do I have the full version of Windows Ultimate right
now? How do I find out?

I can't open attachments on this computer--it won't let me--can anyone tell
me how to do that?

And how do I add/connect to a printer? It won't let me do that either. Is
that maybe because the printer isn't compatible with Vista? (I went through
the set-up process and added the printer (on the network--attached to another
computer)--it actually shows up on the 'printers' option but it just doesn't
do anything when I tell it to print.

ANY help you can give with ANY of these questions would be so, SO
appreciated. Thank you!

The beta versions Microsoft seeded the market with last year all by
default installed as Ultimate -- it's still beta (RC1 most likely) and
will still die at the end of May. Further, you can't in place upgrade
as I understand it. So, if you intend to live with that computer --
get the data moved off to an external storage device and then be
prepared for a full clean install with a purchased copy of Vista
(version of your choice).

Sorry we can't help you being blonde. Now if you would like to put
something in the subject that is suggestive of the problem then folks might
be able to help with that.

Hi,

For first problem - check Barry Schnur's answer.

2nd:
are you talking about an e-mail client ? if yes which one ? e.g. Outlook
Express / MS Outlook

3rd:
Check printer producer's web page and check if there are drivers for your
printer to Vista, install it if exist. If there isn't you can try to install
drivers to Windows XP but then you'll 50% chance if it will be working.

Having a bad day were we?

all too typical smart assed reply by an MVP

Beta versions were the 'Ultimate' version.. and, btw, your beta version will
expire, so be prepared to buy a full version..

Mail attachments in Outlook 2007 can be dragged and dropped onto the
desktop.. I doubt that you have Outlook 2007, but you don't tell us what you
do have, so all we can do is tell you how we do it with our e-mail client of
preference..

RC1 beta did have printer issues of the type you describe.. the only way to
resolve the issue is to get a full version and install it..

An upgrade version would work if AlyssaJoy could install XP first.

Of course, there are two types of "full versions", retail, which is a
royal ripoff, and generic OEM which is MUCH cheaper.

Maybe if you as an MVP took the time to read the post then you could come up
with something wittier than a smart-assed reply.

Geez and to think I actually take the time to stand up for the MVP's.

You make me sick.

I would check with your friend and see if he has the original software

would have the original XP disks.

John M is the blond?

I don't see the OP except included in other posts. This has been happening
more and more lately where threads get split.

The quesiton seems to be "My friend gave me a pc with Vista Ultimate Beta
on it. It wasn't an upgrade--but most of the Beta editions whether via the
TBT or TAP or some other Beta means of delivery CPP were Ultimate--I don't
want to look over them to parse how many other editions might have been in
some program. So the Blond has the full version of Ultimate--but it's a
Beta and it will time out in May or June of 2007.

As to opening attachments it depends on where you can't open them as to what
you do. I would assume this is some email client i.e. Win Mail or Outlook
or perhaps even a web based email.

You need to be more specific as to where you can't open attachment but in
Win Mail and Outlook usually Tools>Options>Security tag gives you the check
boxes to configure this.

As to connect to a printer, I'd advise you to use Help and Support from your
start menu and search for this or to search on this group with the word
Printer where we have discussed this (you seem to indicate you are
networking with the printer).

I have met a blond before, and I don't think being blond has any direct
impact on configuring Vista. All of these questions can easily be answered
by using Help and Support on your Vista start menu.

Only natural blondes can use the "Help! I'm Blonde!" entreaty. It is
not valid for the fake variety.

If you open a CMD prompt and type WINVER this will tell you the version
of Vista installed and its expiration date (if beta).

Security settings are probably preventing you from opening attachments.

Your printer problem might be a compatibility issue with Vista (no
driver support). You might check the MS Vista HCL below.

The nice thing about the retail version of Ultimate (upgrade, that is)
is that it comes with both the 64 and 32-bit versions. The OEM does
not, you have to decide when you purchase weather you want 64-bit or
32-bit.

I seriously considered OEM. In fact, I bought it. However I returned
it (unopened) when I decided I'd prefer the choice of 64 and 32-bit.
The price difference (in my case) was $43.00

Outside of the original posters humorous subject line, this thread is
seriously lacking in humor.

I just thought I'd share. :-)
