Ben

I ran into an issue with a user whose Windows XP machines
Internet Explorer is requiring you to use http:// in front
of any address.

For example, http://www.cnn.com works, but www.cnn.com
doesn't.

This is the first time I have seen this kind of issue.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?

Thanks

From Mike Burgess.

Verify the following entries are correct in the Registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre
fix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

Ben,
Some program (usually spyware\parasite) may have overridden the URL prefix
setting?
Open Regedit to the following locations and verify the below default
entries:
Start | Run (type) "regedit" (no quotes)

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\DefaultPre
fix]
@="http://"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\URL\Prefixes]
"ftp"="ftp://"
"gopher"="gopher://"
"home"="http://"
"mosaic"="http://"
"www"="http://"

Note: edit as needed, *always* Export before editing.
