Help - IE and applications that use IE

Internet Explorer (and a few other things) will not connect to the internet.
While Netscape, mail and others will. It seems like those applications that
use IE are the ones not working.

I have tried everything, scan disk, defrag, virus check, Trojan checks,
spyware checks, disk clean ups, regcleaner, Norton system fix, closed down
every thing else but still having problems. I have gone back to older
versions with Goback as well.

A number of things will not connect to the internet like Weather bug, Internet
Explorer, and others. What seems to be happening, is that when I put a www
address (or IP address) into IE, it checks for it for a second, looking for
the DNS router on my ISP but then it loads 127.0.0.1 for everything. I assume
that is what happens to the other applications that fail as well.

My Hosts file is fine, only localhost entry in there, I can ping my ISP's DNS
router and other applications work with it. I have a good connection with the
isp. Even if I enter the IP address http:\\xxx.xx.xx.xx the same thing happens,
it looks for a moment then it loads 127.0.0.1 so it doesn't seem to be a DNS
problem.

I have been fighting this thing all and I mean all day long, I have tried
everything I know and can not get it to work through these two problems. I
have all current virus protection updates, have ran full system checks with
three local checkers and two on line checkers, none fine any viruses, trojans
or spyware anyplace. I have the latest updates for SP4 and the latest updates
for IE.

Did you find a solution for this?

It seems, since non-IE connections are fine, that it must
be an IE setting. I'm not sure about the 127.0.0.1
loopback address problem, but at our domain, if any "HTTP
1.1" settings are checked (under Tools, Internet Options,
Advanced tab), we won't connect. However, your solution
may be some other combination of checked or unchecked
boxes under HTTP.
Also, we sometimes have to uncheck the option to look for
or use a proxy. Or maybe you use one?
Empty cookies, clear history, and temporary files.
Most of the IE settings are user-specific and get built
fresh from MS defaults upon building a new account. If
you have roaming profiles, I don't think this will work
for domain accounts, but try logging on with a new
account and try connecting with the default settings.
Make sure your Home page is either "blank" or set to a
valid address.

I haven't seen this but am very interested in what's
going on.

The problem is corrected, but I am not really sure (and that bothers me). I
THINK the problem was related to my HOSTS file. I had added some entries that
I found recommended on the internet to help improve the security by redirecting
specific address to your localhost (and not loading the page address).

One of the first things I had done is delete everything I added to the HOSTS
file and reboot but it did not correct the problem. I then went through the
other procedures I noted in my original message (defrag, virus checks).

After 24 hours of messing with the problem it went away. I can not point to
any one thing I did as none of them seemed to work.

I think, I remember reading somewhere that Windows, some where records and
holds DNS lookups for a period of time. If this is the case, it is possible
that the problem was created by the list I added to the HOSTS file and was not
cleared by deleting them because of the DNS lookup being kept in Windows?

If Windows does do this, how long before it clears the lookup information,
does reboot clear it?

The long answer is that the problem is gone, but I am not sure why and trying
to found out for future reference

Thanks for your reply
