I am using ie 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_grd.070227_2254. OS is xp pro service
pack 2. Problem: When I click on a link within a webpage, the link opens
for a second or two then disappears. Popup blockers are all turned off.
Does the same thing even if firewalls are turned off. I have settings in ie
set to open in a new window. I do not reuse windows for launching shortcuts.
The link address appears in the address window for a second or two then the
screen reverts back to the original page. I cannot find any advice on this
problem anywhere on the web. I am almost completely crazy as i have been
working on this problem for a month now. Can one of your guru's out there
suggest what it might be and perhaps a fix other than reinstalling IE? Thank
you in advance...........Micalj

Hi,
First disable browser add-ons from IE> Tools> Manage add-ons.
See: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/troubleshoot.asp
for troubleshooting information.
More at:
IEBlog Troubleshooting and Internet Explorer’s (No Add-ons) Mode:
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/07/25/678113.aspx

If an add-on can easily be reinstalled (google toolbar, yahoo toolbar, etc)
uninstall it.

The block pop-ups feature of Ad-aware Pro/Adwatch causes a problem similar
to this. Is that running?

Next, download and run ie-rereg from
http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=artikel&cat=24&id=31&artlang=en

Or, this may be a malware problem- adware, spyware, hijacker, trojan, etc.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers/26.html

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

6. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may display a blank Web page
after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Dear Don and Frank, First thank you for all your time. Very considerate. I
have followed all steps in your solutions carefully. I disabled all ie
explorer ad ons, downloaded ie-rereg and did rereg.cmd. It worked but did
not cure the problem. I then tried registering all the dll files manually
in the run box ( long process). I am absolutely certain there are no
viruses, adware, or spyware involved. I have checked all settings in ie and
checked file extensions for proper opening program. The problem still
exists. I have also looked at various registry entries to make sure they
were correct (per the help links you sent in your replies) One possible clue
for this problem is that I can right click a link and choose open in a new
window and it opens every time. Also note that the link will open briefly
when I click on it and show the address in the address bar then promptly
reverts back to the page I am on. Example the various links in your
responses do not open unless I choose to open in a new window. Other links
such as outlook express emails work fine. IE links are the only problem.
Note the problem does not exist on all websites. Some of the help links you
sent me that contain links within also work fine. It seems my computer is
being selective about what sites I am going to have the problem on. Although
I have been into computing for over 25 years now this is the craziest thing I
have ever seen. I believe it is something very simple but obscure but just
can't find what it is. I am now thinking some security setting or server
problem but can't imagine how they could possibly cause this. Any other
ideas? My gut tells me that reinstalling ie explorer will not cure this
problem and that would be a very, very last resort for me....Hope to hear
from you.....Mike

Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis log
to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware with
assistance from an expert. **Post your log to

analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Problem solved and had such a simple solution. I have nview desktop manager.
there is a tab setting for applications. I had never noticed before there
is a setting for inhancements. One of the inhancements is a popup blocker
and it was checked. It was over-riding firewall and internet option
settings. If anyone is having the same problem please always check for
multiple application or programs controling settings. I want to say it is so
nice to have a place like this where good people respond to issues. Thank
you all for your time...

YW & thanks for your feedback. "nview desktop manager" sounds like it might
qualify as "deceptive software." <w>
