Michael

At some irregular intervals I get whole page popups with a blue baground and
the following text in the middle:

"Warning! Window has detecteed SPYWARE INSTALLED on your computer
Click to search the recommended spyware removal tools"

Also, my display settings are mysteriously changed and the same popup page
is placed as my default web background page

I have norton2005, Spysweeper and PestPatrol but none have been able to
detect it or remove it.

Any helpful suggestions would be most welcome.

This is a trick, somebody wants money from you for their product, this
is a CON, maybe you should make sure win xp ihas all the latest
patches from ms.

I have seen this trick before, as i say.... they want your money,

My recommendation:
patch windows, run a full virus scan, and relax.

You have spyware - do the following:

Click Start | Run | %temp% | <enter>
Remove everything that is in the temp directory

Open up Internet Explorer:
Tools, options - delete cookies, delete files and clear history.

www.downloads.com:
AdAware SE 1.05 Personal - install/update/run/remove all findings
spybot SD 1.3 - install/update/run/remove all findings

www.webroot.com:
SpySweeper - install/update/run/remove all findings

www.google.com - search for
SpyWareBlaster - install/update/close - this application works without
running.

Open Internet Explorer:
Tools, options, programs tab. Click reset all web settings.

If you're still having trouble boot into safe mode and run the scans again.

Most likely just an ad that is disguised as an error msg. At best they
will want you to buy spyware removal software that you can get for free
elsewhere; worst case scenario it may possibly even INSTALL spyware if
you click on it (including clicking what looks like the "x" in the top
right corner that normally closes pop-up windows)
