Help! I think my IE is corrupt!

I am running IE 6.0. Everything was fine until I updated to Windows SP2 and
now I can't download any pictures, animated graphics etc. I used to be able
to do this.

I have participated in a Hijackthis.com forum and have found out I do not
have any malicious trojans. I have run Spy Bot, Spy Sweeper, CleanUP,
Adware-SE and everything is OK.

I have a subscription to animationfactory.com. When I try to download a
graphic, somehow the "gif" file changes to a "png" file. The animation
doesn't work either. I called the company and they said that this shouldn't
take place. When I try to download the file onto my desktop or hard drive
the "save as screen locks up" and then I get an error message stating, "the
program is not responding". Then I go to the Task Manager to get the stupid
thing to unlock.

I then attempted to download IE 6 from the Microsoft web site and when I go
to install it, it says that my current version is newer than the one I
downloaded and it quits!

SO, I then downloaded the Firefox browser, installed it and I EVERYTHING
works perfectly! I can download anything and the animations all work from the
thumbnails to the download process and everything downloads as a gif, just
the way it's supposed to.

So my problem has to be a corrupted IE, right? What should I do now???

I was just going to just use Firefox but was told in another forum
(Fatwallet.com) by several of the computer guys that I needed to get this
problem resolved in the event this problem creates or triggers a new problem.

That's my tale of woe. Please help if you can.

I have a Dell 4600C, Windows XP Professional with SP2 installed.

Thanks in advance!

at first this sounds like it might only be a ZOne setting on security tab of internet optoins

i recall someting like this happening to me a couple months aog. but IIRC, Firefox dl-ed pngs as pngs, but ie dled pngs as gifs

you could check the declared ver of the ms dl of iesetup (ie6setup? whatever it's called)
then compare to your ver (run IE, help menu>>about, read ver number)

re: failed setups.
i thikn ther'es been plenty of posts (you can google newsgroups to find) about elaborate cleaning out of IE and failed iesetups.

too bad installing ff didn't "fix" the ie trouble, just by luck :)
