I have two machines connected via D-Link router.

Machine 1 - WIndows 98 SE 2.4G Intel Machine ID = 'machine-24'
Machine 2 - Windows XP PRO SP1 2.0G Intel Machine ID = 'machine-20'

Both are in group = 'HOME'

Both work with internet (external router) just fine.

I want to be able to transfer back-and-forth the content of
sub-directory 'c:\mydata' that exists on both machines.

I set them both up pretty much following the instructions @
www.practicalynetworked.com/sharing

I lapelled the share name of the sub-directory on machine 1 (98) as
'24-mydata' and
lapelled the share name of the sub-directory on machine 2 (XP) as
'20-mydata'.

When I go to My Network Places>View Workgroup Computers (on XP machine
2),
I get 'machine-24' and 'machine-20' correctly. When I double click on
'machine-20' ( this machine)
I get '20-mydata' correctly. When I double click on 'machine-24' (the
other machine)
I get '24-mydata' correctly. I can then transfer (copy & move) things
from one to the other fine.

So what is my problem? I cannot do the same thing on machine 1 (98
machine).
When I go to Network Neighborhood on machine 1, I get 'machine-24'
and 'machine-20' fine.
When I double click on 'machine-24' ( this machine) I get '24-mydata'
correctly.
When I double click on 'machine-20' (the other machine), however, I do
not see '20-mydata'.
I therefore cannot transfer (copy & move) things from one to the other
fine.

I hope I stated things correctly.

So what am I missing?

Help?

Have you set up the drives on both machines to be shared and set them
to read write. You may have them read only or not shared.

Remember, I don't want to share whole drive(s) on either machine.

This is what I see on machine 2 (XP machine), when I go to MY
Computer>right click on c>properties>security:
Full Control
Modify
Read & Execute
List Folder Contents
Read
Write

for
Administrators (machine-20\Administrators)
CREATOR OWNER
Everyone
SYSTEM
Users (machine-20\Users)

All have 'Allow' checked for all, except CREATOR OWNER, for which
nothing is checked. And, when I try to check them, after XP
regurgitates a while about it (hourglass), the checks disappear.

Under MY Computer>right click on c>properties>sharing, I see
Share this folder checked with 'C$' as the share name. I could select
'add share' but since I do not want to share c drive (just a
sub-directory there-on), I don't thing that is thing to do.

To repeat, I can see machine-20's '20-mydata' sub-directory content on
machine 2 (where it is), but not on machine 1. When I double click
on 'machine-20', I do not see '20-mydata'. The reverse works just
fine (reading machine1 from machine 2).

???

I found the problem! I had misspelled machine-20 on the XP machine as
mahcine-20. No wonder machine-24 (98 machine) couldn't find it.

Thanks for helps.

I find myself doing that all the time. Spell check does not work on
the crazy codes we use.
