I am unable to get a Start Button, open Windows Explorer or use Internet
Explorer in Windows 2000 Pro SP 4. I am able to launch applications from
the Task Manager, including Netscape, MMC, etc. I have looked in Event
Viewer, but I don't see any error messages. What will happen is the logon
prompt will come up, I'll type in my name and passwords, and the logon
process will begin. I'll get the a blank desktop, no icons, and a
hourglass. When the hourglass goes away, nothing.

One possibility, which was foolish on my part, was using RegMaid on my
Windows 2000 Pro workstation to clear out orphaned class IDs from COM+
applications I had deleted.

I've tried uninstalling Sygate firewall, removing AVG anti-virus,
reinstalling SP 4 (yes, I can run it from Task Manager), and removing start
up items from HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run. Nothing
has worked so far. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Andy,

Try this.

Win+R
"type" explorer <enter>

See if that works

I'll try it, but how I am supposed to pull up the Run menu without the Start
button? I'll try CTRL+Esc in case I don't have the Windows button.
