Our company has some Windows 98 SE computers running
as servers. The shares are protected with passwords.
The Win98SE computers are "out of the box", so they
don't have the newer 128-bit encryption etc.

My problem:

I recently applied all recommended post-SP1 fixpacks
from www.windowsupdate.com to my Windows XP Prof SP1
computer. It now has all fixpacks. Ever since I did
that, I am unable to connect to any of the windows 98
shares. Every time I try to map a drive, a password
dialog appears, but no matter which password I enter,
it is rejected. This used to work without problems
before I applied the fixpacks.

If I REMOVE the passwords on the Windows 98 shares,
which is out of the question by the way, I can connect
without problems. But as soon as I re-enable the
passwords, my XP computer is locked out again.

Is there any way I can get my connectivity back?
Connecting to other XP and -2000 computers is not
a problem.

Is the XP machine joined to a domain?

No it is not. Id is attached to the same workgroup as
all other PC's, we don't have a domain.

I can reproduce that installing the fixpacks on other
XP-SP1 machines has the same effect - they all lose
connectivity to Windows 98SE shares with passwords.

This is the list of hotfixes I applied to XP SP1.
They were compiled into a single update utility by
www.winfuture.de, and they are applied in the order
listed below:

I have looked at this and the only thing i can think of
is...your passwords must be 8 characters or less.

I also wonder if this could be an SMB signing issue. I'm not very familiar
with this, maybe someone else on the alias can comment.

Why would that be an issue?

If you have an "original" Windows 98SE out-of-the-box (I
mean a version without any Internet Explorer updates
installed on it - IE replaces lots of system files),
can you access any password-protected shares on it from
a PC with Windows XP (with all hotfixes applied)?

My scenario: The win98SE PC shares drive D: with share
name "D-DRIVE" and a 6-letter password. A "virgin"
Windows XP SP-1 cann access the shares, but loses this
ability if I install all recent hotfixes.
