Help! HTML has disappeared!

I am editting a previously created website, which was also created using
frontpage. It was working fine, however, now when I go to a page and click
on the code section, there is no code! It shows up in the preview section,
and in the design section, but there is no code. Then when I saved it, there
is nothing on the webpage.

I am not a trained web designer, but have some knowledge of this program.
If someone can help me I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Thanks for replying. I tried your idea. Unfortunately it didn't work.

I opened the webpage, click on file, edit with Microsoft Frontpage, which
takes me to the design mode window. All the info is there. Then I click on
the code view, and there is no code there. I right clicked, and reformat
HTML, went back to design view, and everything was gone. I didn't save as I
don't want to lose everything.

The website is www.cribbageworks.com. The pages I lost are
www.cribbageworks.com/canada and www.cribbageworks.com/designs.

Thanks for any other help. The strangest part is that it was working fine.
I editted quite a few pages with no problems at all, however now if I try to
edit any of them the code is missing. I'm afraid of losing the entire
website. I don't have a hard copy of it backed up, nor do I know if one
exists. I guess the message here is to back up everything before doing any
work!

Sounds like you are editing your pages live on the server?

Much safer to work locally then Publish up to the server.
Safe way to open your local web is;
Open FP
File | OPEN WEB

Hi Trevor

This may sound silly, but are you actually able to open the site and see
this code? When I open it on my frontpage (the cribbageworks/designs
page), I only have 25 lines of code. Lines 13-21, 23, and 25 all just say
<body>.

In fact now if I open any page they all have the same code (only 25 lines of
it), even though in the design mode all the info is still there. I had
actually added those pics to the cribbageworks/designs page after I had lost
it so there would be something on that page for the time being.

I'm afraid to make a backup copy as there is no code there. If I do make a
back-up copy, will that have any impact on what is online. I do not want to
lose the entire website.

Thanks again for all you help. This was supposed to be a few simple changes
and is turning into a nightmere!

Meghan

Thanks Rob.

You're right, I was editting on the server. It was supposed to be a few
quick changes, and I guess I foolishly thought it would be okay. Lesson
learned...

Anyways, if I open it this way and make a back-up copy, will this have any
influence on what is published, or will I then have to save and publish. I'm
just afraid to lose the entire site.

Thanks
Meghan

No, you can't lose the online site by making a local copy. But save it to
somehwere different so that you can keep track of what is good and what is
bad

You may see no code because you are opening your local copy (which I assume
has been corrupted)

This is http://www.cribbageworks.com/designs.htm
(You can copy this to your hard disk.)

Hi Trevor

Thanks for copying the code for me. I tried copy and pasting it, which
worked, however, as soon as I save it, the code disappears again, and I only
have 25 lines of it.

For fun, I tried to create a new website using that code. Same thing
happened when I tried to save it.

I also tried un-installing and re-installing front page, and also tried
installing it on a different computer. Neither worked.

Although I really appreciate you copying that code for me. It's strange
that you are able to see it and I can't. I am opening it directly off the
internet, not as a hardcopy.

Thanks again for all your help. Any other ideas?

Editing locally will have absolutely no effect on what is on the server
- until you publish your local copy.

The 2 pages Canada.htm and designs.htm both have multiple <body> tags
on the server. The content for Canada.htm appears to be lost, but the
images for design.htm are still in place.

Open the page in Notepad rather than in FrontPage, and remove the extra
<body> tags. View in a browser then View Source. Save the source to
your desk top and edit in Notepad. Then copy/paste the code into
FrontPage, replacing the original code - use a backup copy for this
since there will be extra bits that need to be dealt with.

Thanks for the ideas. Here's an interesting thing I just discovered. Using
internet explorer, I went to the website. I went to file, edit with
microsoft frontpage, and it opened as normal. Instead of entering my
username and password, I clicked cancel. All of the code is now visible.
However, if I enter the username and password and hit okay, all of the code
disappears. This happens with all of the pages when I open them.

Do you think it's possible then that it's not on my end at all, but a
problem with the server?

At this point now I am unable to make a back-up copy of the website. As
soon as I open the webpages using the password, all the code is gone. Then
if I save, all the stuff on the design view also disappears.

I'm thinking it would be smart to open the pages without the password, and
copy the code into a word document or notepad or something. This way I am
able to get it back if I lose everything.

Thanks again for all your help!
Meghan

If you can use FTP (some hosts do not allow FTP and server extensions on
the same site) use an FTP program to DOWNLOAD the site to a new folder
on your PC. Delete all the folders with names starting with _vti , make
a backup copy of the folder and contents. Open the folder in FrontPAge
and allow FP to convert to a web.
Do NOT use FTP to upload.

Alternatively, Don't open any pages on the server - open the web and
File->Publish to a folder on your PC. Make a backup of the folder on
your PC.
