Sounds like your video card drivers need updating.

"rifleman":

Any chance you could explain how to update the video card , since he only
has a black screen with which to work ? Guess I'm asking for myself if he
already knows the secret code and I do not.

Edit c:\boot.ini and add /BASEVIDEO. Only add basevideo to yours not use my entire sample.

eg
[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /BASEVIDEO

Usually, the procedure would be to start in Safe Mode, uninstall the video
driver, and then restart in normal mode. It should come up in VGA mode, since
it does not now have any other video driver to use. It should then be
possible to see to install the correct video driver.
This, of course, may not always work - but it has always done so for me.

There may also be some joy to be found in rolling back to an earlier system
restore point.

David:
Good of you to explain. However, that is way over my head. Guess I shouldn't
have asked if I didn't want to know. Those books on XP sure didn't go there.
No need to try and explain further though . I have too many things on my
plate as it is . These old brain cells can only do so much before they give
out.

Hello Canada !
Dumb OKIE here.
Thanks for the input, it was far more understandable to this know nothing
one.
All I can hope for is that it never happens to my machine. Rotsa Ruck there.
Ya'll stay warm up there in the frozen tundra. I've got my youngest
whippersnapper on long distance right now. He's in the north of Alaska and
crying about the 18" of snow on the ground and the temp. Things are tough
all over.
