hello to al

im strongly thinking about getting a new gaming pc. I want to build i
myself because if i screw up its on me and i can only be mad a
myself. i now i wont get screwed this way liek i did with alot o
pc-build-repair places

ok the catch is that i have about $2000 give or take 300. but i don
know what to do with the system

i know i want it to be super fast and to stand out for all my friend
to be jelous. well i was thinkin of gettin

Frankly, in a ~ $2000 system (or even a $800+ system, IMO),
you ought to consider dual hard drives. NOT RAID0, or if
you "really" wanted RAID0, then at least three drives. IOW,
two separate drive volumes on separate physical drives.

Of course you don't "need it", nobody does except mad
overclockers looking to up the voltage by ~ 25% or more.
However for purposes of having lowest noise, you might look
at getting a quality heatsink and a large low RPM fan. Same
for the case, look at replacing any existing fans and/or
supplimenting them with quality large low RPM versions.

Does you case have 120mm rear exhaust? I was too lazy to
look it up, links to products would've helped. Best to
choose a case with the larger exhaust fan, and NOT an intake
hole on the side next to the CPU which can reduce video card
and hard drive cooling. Video card will tend to be harder
to cool, if there's a side hole at all it's better placed at
least 70% of the way (at center hub) below the edge of the
video card to push the majority of the air, but not
necessarily all of it (top likes cool air too) under the
card. This can often eliminate the need for a fancy
aftermarket heatsink for the video card and sometimes even
allow video card fan to run at lower RPM (often it's the
loudest fan in an otherwise quiet gaming system).

You can build a decent game machine way lower than 2000. After a
certain point the price performance gains are much worse you pay way
more to get a little bit and with the M2 coming out pretty soon and
Intel counterparts and probably new graphics cards and chips around
Xmas it really isnt worth spending that much and see the value of your
stuff plummet in a few months. Everything plummets but its much worse
seeing a 2000 system go down to 800 then seeing a 800 system go down
to 500 or 400.

Im seeing $360 or so X2 4200.

The 3800 X2 is around $295 or so. You can save around 50 bucks.
The 3800 is said to be a great OCer and you sound like you are open to
that so a supposedly easy 2.4 OC should get you in the 4600 X2 range.

If you get an opteron 165 for $330 its supposed to easily get 2.7-2.8.
The opteron 165 has 1 gig cache and can be OCed quite a bit.
Do you really need a SLI board?

MB I see it for 160-170. Id probably get the cheaper ASUS board in the
100 range since new systems are coming out unless I knew this had a
real substantial advantage like the cooling pipe gimmick made it far
better for OCing or something vs the older board or it had a feature I
wanted that the other 100 board didnt have.

That would abpout $400 total so far if you went the cheaper route.

Check out the prices of the 7800GTX vs the 7900GT which is roughly
around the same performance according to some tests It hink the 7900GT
is cheaper around $360 or so.

I wouldnt bother with water cooling.
Thats already 800 or so.

They have the Thermaltake Mambo for 48 now at newegg with rebate.
These kind of things are totally subjective --- if you like the style
you should get it since you have to keep it a for a long time. I
generally like to wait for a sale at Compusa etc for prices down in
the 29-49 region I think 105 is way too much for a case though I spent
150 years ago for an enlight when cases actually did cost a lot. But
its your money and taste.

Thats 905+. Antec you want is generally 100 bucks or more.
Compusa believe or not has great sales on PSes and believe or not
Radio Shack has started getting aggressive. They had the Ultra cases
400-500 watts for 20-30 bucks AR. Not the best PSes in the world but
not bad either though some people reported a few failures last year on
them. i have one and its slick looking.

Compusa had a 500 watt Antec for $50 last month AR.

So you can have a very good game system for about half the amount so
far though I would add 2 gigs ---- 1 gig sticks x 2. Ive found 1 gig
really helps for lesser systems in games like DOOM. In a link I found
to advice on hardware setuips for BattleField2 the game they even
recommended 2 gigs. Theres been great sales on mem recently more on
2x512 than 2x1gig but they are finally having sales on 1 gig sticks.
Radio shack last month or two had a 1 gig stick ULTRA for $25 briefly
AR but shipping was too high for me. They had it for $45 or so many
times though AR.
