I'm trying to install a new Maxtor 40G drive on an older PII computer.
There are no other drives. I have formatted the drive using the Maxtor CD,
formatted using the Win XP CD, and nothing changes the fact that the system
hangs when I set the Primary Master detection to Auto. I have chacked,
double-checked, and triple-checked the jumper and cable settings, switched
the cable with the CD drive (which works fine), and even took the drive back
to the store and got a replacement. What am I missing?????

Does it appear in the BIOS correctly? When you say the system hangs,
is it actually booting to Win XP or is it not even moving on from the
initial boot up screen? Does your MoBo support 40g drives? Did you
have to use an overlay? Has it got an OS installed?

YES! I did not know about the capacity limitation jumper. It's showing up
now. Thanks.

The problem was that it was not detected by the BIOS. It's showing up now
that I put the capacity limitation jumper on. It was hanging while the BIOS
was trying to detect the drive. I guess the motherboard is too old for a
40G drive, but hopefully I'll get 32G out of it. Thanks!

A PII computer motherboard's BIOS may not be able to use a 40 GB Hard Drive.
There is a jumper on the hard drive for CSL (Cable Select) Master and Slave.
On a IDE Cable one should be Slave and one should be Master if they are both
slave or master or CSL then it may not show up properly.

On older computers the BIOS may not be able to handle larger hard drives.
Using software from Maxtor like Max Blast or EZ-Max you may be able to get
around this. The OS used may make a difference ass well.

That's the solution I ended up using (the clj). I got XP loaded and now
everything works great! My drive capacity has been reduced to 32G. Anyway
to get the lost 8G back?

The BIOS of your PII motherboard is too old to recognize the current larger
harddrives. The largest harddrive your motherboard will recognize is
something like 10GB (approx.)

Doubt if you would have got much more out of it even using an overlay.
Sounds like a nice and easy solution to a perenial problem. Could
always buy a PCI controller card if you want to use the full amount
but is it worth the cost.

You're right. It's my roommate's computer, and by the time he fills 32G,
he'll probably be ready to get a new box and put it in there.
