My computer crashed the other day. I was in the middle of a major project
and my last backup just isn't recent enough. We tried the recover disks that
came with the computer, not Microsoft recovery disc just what came with the
unit. We have Microsoft XP. They only started doing the start up then went
into this cycel of restarting and restaring and restarting etc. Could only
stop the vicious cycle by the prolonged pushing of the power button. But
the issue is today I just read in the manual that these disks wipe the hard
drive anyway. So how do I get my files if the computer won't go through
start up? Not even safe mode? ANy help would be appreciated.

You might be able to get Spinrite6 from grc.com to fix the drive long
enough to back it up. Thats what I did recently when my drive wouldn't
boot and Ghost wouldn't create an image of the drive. Spinrite fixed
the drive enough that I could use Ghost to replace it. I have been
using Spinrite since the days of DOS and it has helped numerous times.

Stop working on the drive immediately. If the hard drive is damaged
physically, the more you mess with it the greater the chance that you
will destroy your data. If the hard drive is physically viable, you can
probably get the data off with data recovery software. Professional
data recovery software can be quite expensive and takes skill to use;
it would be smart to take the machine to a local repair shop (not the
equivalent of BigStoreUSA) that can do data recovery.

If the hard drive is physically damaged, contact a professional data
recovery firm. I like DriveSavers (www.drivesavers.com), but there are
others such as Seagate Data Recovery and Ontrack. These firms' services
are not inexpensive, but only you can determine the value of your data.

Thanks heaps for your advice I think we have found a place in town through
referals who can fix the problem. Thanks about the info about not messing
with it too much. It is a computer for a small buisness so everyone is
trying to fix it even when they aren't too experinced. Your reccomendation
should help me keep everyone at bay till it is fixed. Thanks!

Thanks Michael. We are going to tak it in to a place but will keep you
suggestion too if this happens again. Argggg!!! Hopefully not! We just
have too many computer illeterate people using this one machine at a home
office :o)

You're welcome. Hope it all comes right for you. And maybe do more
frequent backups in the future, hmm? :-)

Hi,

If that option proves too expensive, try putting your hard drive in
another computer as a slave drive, you might be able to read from it in
there as it doesn't need to be able to boot, just run normally.
