Help: Games won't run XP Home

I'm having the same problem with 2 different games, medal
of honor and nascar racing 2003. Both run fine right
after installing them. Then i reboot or even let PC run
for awhile and then i try to run them again, and nothing
happens. I look in task manager and i can see the .exe
pop up in the processes tab and then it goes away.

I reinstall the app, and it works fine... once.

I've reinstalled my drivers and rolled back all windows
updates.... it blows my mind what the problem could
be.... could it be Windows File Protection screwing
something up?

I've read posts in this and other newsgroups regarding
this and nothing is concrete.

Hi Ken,

Diablo and Warcraft have that problem when run on
a system which has KaZaa installed. Does this apply?

Jimmy,

Thanks for the info. Kazaa lite is not installed
currently, but it was. It was one of the MANY things I
uninstalled thinking it was causing a possible conflict
with these other apps. I also went through the registry
and deleted all references to kazaa (and other non
existent software).

Do you know if there is any freeware that will go through
and cleanup the reg?

So, even without Kazaa installed, I still have an issue.

thanks and I appreciate the help.

Hi kenbuechele,

To clean your registry this is a good little utility:

I might not have mentioned it, but the games work once or
for a short while after i reinstall it, like less than an
hour. I let the PC sit idle for awhile and then they stop
working.

i look in the event log and nothing. i still haven't
disabled win file proctection. i'm trying to think of
anything else that might be running in the background
that causes problems.... is there a way to turn perfmon
on or something that will log all programs that load in
and out of memory while the PC is idle so I can tell what
is causing the problem?

I'm about ready to throw the damn thing out the window...

and of course, i bought one of those put together
systems, so i don't have a true win xp home cd that i can
use to reinstall the OS over itself....

thanks for the help, it seems you are the man with
advice.

Hi Ken,

Well, if reinstalling the game after uninstalling KaZaa doesn't work
then there's a chance that this patch may help overcome the problem:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/WinXPHome/Patch/1.0/WXP/EN-US/updatesecdrv.exe

Windows Task Manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL) shows you everything
that is running on your system anytime you look at it. You can lookup what a
program or process does here: http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

If all else fails, return to the folks who put the system together and get
them to provide you with your XP CD, or use System Restore to return your
system to a previously stable date:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gethelp/systemrestore.asp

Good luck Ken, I hope you get that problem sorted.

Great news Ken, glad we were able to get that sorted out! :-)

Cheers,
Jimmy.

| Jimmy,
|
| Turned out I had a virus.. parite.b and parite.c, both
| which might have been coming from am cdilla .exe that was
| spying on my machine.
|
| i disinfected both using http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
| and they are running with no problems after a reinstall
| (and letting them sit all day and they still work..).
|
| thanks again for all your help,
| Ken
