I hope this is the right place to ask. If not, please advise.

I have a small business. We lease our computers from Everdream.com.
The lease includes DSL service (through XO/Covad), email (through
Critical Path), internet access, etc. It does not include web hosting.

A couple of years ago we registered a domain name (with Register.com)
for the business intending to use it for email and later for a web
site. We have been using it for email for 2 years, but only got around
to working on the web site last month.

A few weeks ago, I purchased a web hosting account with Verio. I
wanted them to only handle the web site. I didn't want the email
affected. Unfortunately, the email somehow got messed up and we lost
quite a few messages. I think we have it all straightened out, but I
would like some tools so that I can check on things myself.

Here are some of the tools I know of:

whois.net: Lists information about a domain name including the domain
servers.

ping: Resolves a URL to an IP address and tracks the time fir a
message to go there and back.

tracert: One of the techs used this to query an smtp address, but I
don't know what it does.

What other tools and commands should I become familiar with?

Can anyone recommend a good intro book that I can keep handy both as a
tutorial and a reference?

Thanks

A command line tool, nslookup and www.dnsreport.com this web site will test
your public DNS, MX records, reverse lookups on the SMTP server IP and
connectivity to your SMTP servers.
