I am 60 year old with no computer skills. i have purchased FP2003 for my 12yo
son, who is a computer novice, with XP home edition on his pc. He has built a
simple website, registed a domain name and wants to publish, but we dont know
how !! Can you kind people help with something as simple as this probably is
??
I realise we seem like dummies, but we are absolute beginners and have to
start somewhere. We would truly be grateful for lots of advice...Thanks

We all started somewhere ;-)

You need an account on a server with a web hosting company.

The account name is normally the domain name.
"Normally," the domain needs to be registered with the same company that has
your web hosting account.

When the account is established, the hosting company will "normally" add the
domain name to the Domain Name Server system which is what enables you to click
www.mywebsite.com and have the browser open the web site.

Once the domain has propagated throughout the DNS system, if the account (
server ) has FrontPage Extensions installed, you can then publish to your
account by telling FrontPage to publish to http://www.mywebsite

If the server does not have extensions, you will have to publish using ftp to
ftp://mywebsite.com

There are some companies that offer free hosting, but as a general rule they are
not very user friendly.

There are many reasonable hosting companies out there.
I use www.123ehost.com for my "not for profit" web sites because they have a
hosting package that only costs $50.00 per year.

There is a $25 set up fee, and their domain fees are $10 per year.

"Normally," the domain needs to be registered with the same company that
has
your web hosting account.

Just FYI, it definitely doesn't have to be, and usually isn't, for me.

you are correct.
I should have said: Normally "it's easier" if the domain is registered
with the same company.

It is for me anyway.

It is easier, except maybe if you want to switch hosts.

Well, for me it's easier to register the domain myself; it only takes a
minute to set it to my host's name servers. I'd rather be in control of the
name, rather than the host company controlling it.

Nor does mine. I figured if I don't like my host, it makes it easier to
switch. I do like my host though...they just lowered the monthly and
increased services...wowie!

I didn't know how to register my preferred domain name, so when I
signed up for an
account with 2mhost.com hosting service, its data entry forms asked me
for a domain
name. I entered the perfect domain name for my blogs, and was informed
that
the domain name was available. As I continued, I was told the
"politicalblogs.com:"
domain name was mine.

It wasn't until I completed the account and received a welcome email
that I learned
it was my responsibility to transfer my domain to the hosting
service's servers that
I had an inkling of trouble.

It turns out that somehow, an outfit known as names4ever.com held my
domain and
wouldn't let me transfer my domain to the hosting service's servers
unless I used the
appropriate account and password. Since I thought I was registering
via the hosting service,
I didn't have anything to do with an account/password for the domain.
Don't have a clue
what the acount number/password for politicalblogs.com is.

Names4ever said they can only allow the registrar (a woman totally
unrelated to my
domain) to transfer the domain to 2mhost.com's servers. I've written
her twice to
request her to release my domain name to me, but she ignores my pleas.

I've filed an official complaint with Icann about the highjacking of
my domain
but was told things will move very slowly...if at all. This makes me
sick. I
had such high hopes for politicalblogs.com. All the similar domain
names are
taken. My host washed its hands of my problem, saying that all this
could been
avoided had I paid $8.00 extra for its domain name registration. I
didn't know about
the extra fee. I would willingly paid it had I known what I know now.
