Help finding specific source code

Hi,

I teach a VB .NET class, and one of the students obviously cheated on
the final exam (which was to write a Tic Tac Toe game). They were
smart enough to change all of the variables from the program that was
copied, though, and I'm having a difficult time finding the original
source.

Can anyone suggest a place that would let me search their database of
codes for snips of code, or something like that? I'm hesitant to post
the source code here, but I will if all else fails.

Did you try Google Web Search and Google Groups Search?

Plagiarism goes on all the time in 'This' newsgroup and many others, your
asking the right people don't you know !

My advice; It's Christmas, you dont know for 'sure' they cheated otherwise
you would not be trying to 'prove' it. So why not give them the benefit of
the doubt and mark it as seen.

Hi Mike,

I thought there was someone who asked to help him with a Tic Tac Toe game
but that is as far as I remember me some months ago and I thought to
remember me that that student was very active himself to find the best
solution.

What is wrong if students are learning the places where they can find
solutions for there problems.

One of the very active regulars from this newsgroup is a student and he is
very good in that.

I myself have always said, it is better to remember where to find the
solution, than trying to remember the solution.

(But don't wory, the sentence "We are not doing your homework" is often used
in this newsgroup")

Thinking about this more. In the world we live in now, the age
of the Internet with tools like google, its so easy to leach of the examples
of others, and in fact it plays a very important part in academic and
professional life. However, it can also be a negative thing if used
improperly.

You have to assume that all humans are lazy and usually take the path of
least resistance. After all, what would you prefer to do, go down the pub
and spend the night with your girlfriend or spend 10 hours slaving over
virgin code.

We, so don't make it easy on them. Next time you set them an example, stop
using other people examples to code to ( like you did ) and make something
up new which is unlikely to be on the internet. Something local perhaps to
your college or school, which is a problem waiting to be solved.

Hey who knows, you might even invent a new board game !

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice. I had been searching on Google Groups and Web
for a few days, without a lot of luck, and I was mainly hoping for a
place like PlanetSource, but with a search into the actual scripts.

In this particular case, I know for a fact that the student cheated.
The program has several bits of code that I didn't teach, including
several bits that were done differently than I taught, and the student
couldn't explain why they did it that way. In fact, the student
couldn't explain any of the code. Furthermore, the code was extremely
complex (12 pages printed), when the code I expected would have been
much simpler (another student turned in 3 pages printed).

Really, the fact is that if they had taken original code and worked
with it, I wouldn't really have a problem. After all, that's how I
learned in the beginning, too. But in this case, it's fairly obvious
that they downloaded someones code, changed the variable names, and
that's it.

You know, OHM, you're right, I did get out lazy on the assignment. I
always like to assign games, since most students have fun writing
them, and I've always tried to use a game that they're familiar with.
I've got some time to think about it now, though (new semester and
all), so I guess I will come up with a totally new game or something.
