My D drive disappears frequently. Sometimes the E cd rom drive that is
on the same ribbon cable disappears also.
It's an intermittent problem but happens quite frequently. I replaced
the ribbon cable and there is no change to the problem.
Everything was working fine for a long time prior to this.
What should my next step be? What is the most logical way to trouble
shoot this problem.
Please let me know if there is a better group to post this question.
Thanks,

I believe that if both drives are set to master, or both to slave, then
it'll confuse the system and then one or the other drive might appear or
disappear. Have you checked out this possibility?

Everything was working great prior to this, and I know I didn't change
anything. So, unless windows can change the master/slave settings on
its own, then the drives should be set correctly. Also, the problem is
intermitent. When it's working it's working fine.
I also firmed up connections while I was inside the computer though
nothing felt particularly loose.
Thanks for your reply.

How old is the system? The IDE controller might be on the way out.

Since both drives on the same controller go out at the same time, its
unlikely that the problem is a bad power lead to the drives.

My guess would be...power supply or IDE controller.

Replacing either one would be about as difficult. Either get a PCI
controller card to replace that secondary controller...or get a
different ps to try.

Have a nice week...
