You only need the converter if you actually want the drive to operate.
Otherwise... ;-) Seriously though, the hardware to do the job is cheap and
common and almost any well-stocked computer shop should have it. Under $5 in
the US and probably only a few £ on the other side even with the VAT. Here

yes but it's not all that special, just a direct pin-convertor plus a
power connector since the laptop drive was powered by it's 44 pin
connector.

Just be careful plugging the drive in, if you get it back to front the drive will never work again.
