Hello,

Just recently my computer froze in win98. CTRL-ALT-DEL wouldn't reboot
it, and there's no reset button on the tower. I had no choice but to
turn the power off. When I turned the computer back on, it wouldn't
boot up. I just get a black screen, no beeps, and the lights on the
keyboard flash. This happened once before. I took it to a repair shop
and they guy said he had to reset my BIOS (or maybe he said CMOS, I
don't remember). It took him all of 5 minutes to the tune of $30.
Whatever he did, I'd like to try and do myself.

I tried searching google for similar posts, but I'm not sure what my
problem is. Is it with the BIOS, or CMOS (not really sure what the
difference between these two are)? I found the jumpers on my
motheroard for clearing CMOS (again, not even sure what that really
means), and one for updating BIOS. I don't want to play around with
these until I'm sure what the problem is, or at least sure I'm not
going irreparably erase something on my motherboard. My motherboard is
a p4ita.

Thanks for any help!

He most likely pulled the power cord out and cleared the CMOS and then
reset the correct BIOS parameters. You paid for his knowledge and
experience so no arguments there from me and he got you
up-and-running.
If you want to learn more and save money then just lurk and post
especially on the usenet group specific to your board/chip set make.
You can find loads of info about your system with the free Aida32,
http://www.aida32.hu/aida-download.php?bit=32
and there are also usually Forums specific to boards/devices/chip sets
like,
http://pub140.ezboard.com/bk7s5amotherboardforum
Free to join and post and also have Misc sections/Other hardware
sections etc.

HTH :)

The nagging question is WHY did the CMOS drop out? Maybe he needs
a new battery, or maybe something else. I think the shop should
have at least replaced the battery on spec.
