I'm pulling my hairs out. I have an external 3 speaker system which works
perfectly on my desktop PC. However, when I hook it to one of my two laptops,
NO WAY will it work ! The sound continues to come from the lousy laptop
built-in speakers ! And I looked and looked at the sound settings, changed
things around 100 times to absolutely no avail !

What am I missing ??? This is driving me nuts. Any hints / tips most warmly
welcomed.

1- Make sure that the speakers are plug in the righ port
2-go to control panel - sounds, speech, and audio - sounds and audio - in
the Volume tab hit speaker bottom - move the volume up and go out with ok
(one time) - hit the advanced bottom - you see a Speaker set up: (select your
system here) - go to performance and make everything up - go out now with ok
all windows...ty again

if this doesn't work try this to set your sound to default settings

Other than what LFR said, the problem may also be hardware related. Connect
any pair of headphones or other speakers to the jack. If they also don't
work, the problem may be in the jack itself. A contact may be broken inside
which would prevent the internal switching from the laptop's speakers to the
external ones.

No other easy check except to open the laptops case and use jumpers on the
motherboard's leads to the jack. Not a job for the faint of heart, but one
for a pro that opens notebooks all the time.

You could also try:

Go into services and make sure Windows Audio is started - I'm not sure if it
needs to be started in order for the PC's speakers to work, but it needs to be
started for external audio.

Are the external speakers properly defined in your properties?
In XP:
- Start
- Control Panel
- Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices
- Sounds and Audio Devices
- Click on the "Audio" tab
- Under "Sound playback", "Default device": click on the down arrow to
display all sound devices configured
- Select the desired device
- Click "Apply"
- Click "OK"
- Enjoy!
