Please, Help!

In IE, Netscape, CuteFTP, Outlook Express I can not connect with any
server, neither by IP address, nor by name. However, if I enter the IP
address of a site in the "host" file, I can connect with this site.
So, I can connect only with the sites listed in my host file. The
program nslookup still works and can resolve host names.
It all happened 2 days ago, and I have no idea what caused it.
Everything worked fine until then, and I did not change anything.
If you have some suggestions, please, reply to my e-mail
(e-mail address removed).

Thank you in advance,

Marina Sapir

Check the DNS setting of your windows. It seems that your DNS configuration
have problems.

That sounds incorrect. Communicating by IP does not require DNS or a HOSTS
file. The HOSTS file allows you to communicate by name when you cannot
resolve a target host by name. Adding an entry to your HOSTS file and then
trying to connect by IP is no different than not having a HOSTS file.
Adding an entry to your HOSTS file and then trying to connect by name will
make a difference. Perhaps, in your troubleshooting, you got confused about
what worked and what didn't?!

If you can get their by IP and not name, then as the other poster said, you
have a DNS issue.

Might be a damaged Winsock. If nslookup works but you cannot connect with
the names listed in hosts file, then reinstall TCP/IP.

Marina,

Asked here, answered here. For everybody's benefit.

I too would suspect a Winsock corruption problem. Try LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFIx
from <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>. One or the other may help sort you out.

Cheers,
Chuck
