A good starting point might be if you told us in
detail ***how*** you're trying to connect to
the other machine. You post does not contain
any details whatsoever.

Remote Desktop?

First the port 3389 must be opened in any firewall / router that's between
you and the target machine. You can easily have more than one machine
targeted but must use this to set up separate ports on each else the router
won't be able to route...

You can only remote into XP Pro and W2003 but you can install the client on
anything from 98 up.

You must have the target configured to accept remote connections, right
click my computer>properties>remote tab.

I am running windows 2003 on my desktop and windows xp pro on my laptop. What
I am trying to do is connect remotely from my destop to my laptop. I created
a domain called contoso.com. The reason why I am doing this is I would like
to go for my mcse....so I am going through the 70-290 book.

Thank you for your help I am going to try to open that port. If you have
more suggestions feel free

Something I forgot to mention my router is a D-link and my laptop is a member
of the contoso domain

You're still not saying if you wish to set up a connection
to a share or a Remote Desktop connection. If unsure
about the two, have another look at the first chapter of
your MCSE test book.

Remote desktop doesn't care about domains, it will try to connect to
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:3389 (Or whatever the port is) and the target will respond
with a logon screen much as you normally see except you can put it in a
window if you want.

If they are on the same network behind the router you should have nothing to
do, if you want to connect from the outside then whatever port you use will
have to permit connections from outside on the router.
