OK, here's the story:

For the past month my computer has been inundated with phony messages from a
variety of sources, each claiming to be from Microsoft. The messages urge me
to download the attached security patch but an anti-virus program has
determined that every message contains a virus or worm. Now I know that
Microsoft never contacts individuals privately about security patches, so
who's behind this? I've gotten about a dozen of these things so far and I'm
beginning to think I'm being targeted. The only other person I know of whose
received these things is a friend with whom I share one special quality...we
are both outspoken liberals who have never hesitated to make out opinions
known in several newsgroups. Is there a connection? How would I even begin to
find out?

Just aother worm. You're not being targeted. Just think of it as
internet background noise. Delete the things and forget about them.

Dear paranoid Figaro,

Do the logical thing. Make it known in the newsgroups that you've
repented and now see light ... that Rush Limbaugh has put his blessing
on you and you'll vote straight Republican forevermore.

If that doesn't work, contact your ISP and plead that he start
blocking known malicious code. If that doesn't work, just keep on
praying for forgiveness by President Bush while deleting all
unsolicited attackments.

Good luck,

Take the raw text of the message, (i.e. including the header) and stick
it into spamcop.net (you need to register, although it's free), and
they'll tell you who is really infected.

You are not being picked out. I've been getting 3-10 a week for many
months now (I tend to let them through my mail filters, so I can report
them and get the afflicted party cleaned up, or disconnected ..
whichever).

Figaro,

I'm not a pro like the others, but, I have had my ears tweaked but good by
Auntie Virus (Heather....and let's just say, I can *now* wear pierced
earrings...<bg>) on the Windows ME ng when I thought I was one of MS's fav
customers, and that they appreciated my business so much that they sent me a
personal copy of the security and anti-virus patches and updates. Oh
yeah... Thanks to Heather and some of the other very kindhearted folks
there, I managed to RAID my PC and get back to norm.

My point? Just remember, Figaro, MS does not care about you enough my
friend to send you a personal e-mail with patches and updates to protect you
against all the bad guys. They may put out a notice stating that a patch,
or update, etc., is available on the Internet for you to go to and down
load, but ...you can take it to the bank, if you get one delivered to your
door, it is certainly your 'Virus of the Month Club' wolf in Billy wool.
'k...?

Have a really great day ;-)))

Jan :)

You are not alone, everyone else is getting these. I don't know if that
makes it better or not.
