I have just gone onto win xp and have a problem with text
popup adverts that keep popping up every 2 mins. Has
anyone else had this problem?? Does anyone know how to
get rid?? Is the windows messenger installed by XP??
Please help would be very grateful.
Regards
These pop-ups have nothing to do with Windows Messenger. They are actually a
valid security alert. You're receiving them because you haven't done enough
to secure your computer. Some will advise stopping the service that the
spammers exploit, but this is a foolish thing to do as some applications
(your AVP for one) relies on the service to send you messages.
Stopping the service is akin to trying to cure measles by applying calamine
to the spots. Whilst it will cure the spots, it will do nothing for the
virus the of which they are a symptom. The reason you are receiving the
advertisments is because your computer is broadcasting open NetBios ports.
By installing a firewall (even turning on the ICF would do, though it only
stops incoming traffic and does nothing to block spyware and/or trojans from
'phoning home') you stop the problem at source.
