I have been perusuing previous answers to this problem, and none restores
this facility to me desktop Start menu. I even did a repair install but that
did not do it. Short of doing a complete reformat, is there anything I could
do to rectify it? Mine is a stand alone XP Pto OS desktop PC and I am the
sole user.
TIA

Sorry for the spelling mistakes in original post. I should also have added
that SP3 and all updates are done.

The follow up from my last post
All of which I have done, and the search
showed eight results which I will attach as a printscreen shot in my next
follow up, which I have
saved as a Word document. When I click on some of them, e.g. C:\i386 windows
indicates that it cannot open the file, do I want to search the internet, or
choose a program to use from a list. If I choose to search the internet,
there is no helpful answer, and if I choose Notepad, there is a lot of
gobbledygook. Where do I go from there?

Others,e.g.C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i.386 won't even open.
The printscreen does not show all of the files and there locations clearly,
but there are seven, plus the helpsvc.zip file from the website article you
quoted.

I hope I can now complete my post, but I suspect the the printscreen will
have to be oin another post.

I hope this has described the problem, because the screenshot is not allowed

Screenshots, or any other kind of attachment, are *allowed* here, but many,
if not most, of us discourage attachments. Also note that many, if not most,
of us here will not open any attachments.

hi - i suddenly had same problem. found this thread. followed the link
offered a few posts earlier. encountered the same obstacles - files that
couldn't be found blah blah, things i don't remember any more. anyway - do
you have a CD with XP on it? put it in your CD drive. when you come to the
bit that says 'point at the i386 file' (or something like that), open My
Computer and click on the drive with the CD, then imitate the file address in
the illustration in the instructions, but you may need to make some
modifications - make it the right drive letter, and you may need to
substitute SP1 or SP2 for SP3, depending how old your CD is. i found that the
Help was restored before those final tweakings in the instructions. post
again if you need more details alonmg the way.

Hi Folks
I have a similar problem. I believe that I killed something, somewhere,
sometime. A few weeks later I tried to use Help and Support and nothing
happened.

I followed the link as indicated and still nothing happens.

When I try to start the service "Help and Support" I get the error message
"Could not start the Help and Support service on Local Computer. Error 126:
The specified module could not be found"

When I try to run Help and Support, I do get a process HelpCtr.exe in
Taskmanager, but, it closes after ~1min.

I have checked other things and found nothing wrong, bt, obviously something
is.

Any help would be appreciated.

No, I run IE6, so there must be some other explanation. I can't wait any
longer, so it looks as though I'll have to reformat.

Are you running Internet Explorer 7 by any chance? I had the same
problem a few months ago and had tried everything suggested when I
stumbled on a message somewhere that said to delete IE 7. Did so and
Help & Support came right back, as well as a couple of other things
that had stopped working. If you delete IE 7, Windows will
automatically revert to IE 6. Microsoft even has a utility on their
Web site to block installation of IE 7, so they must have a lot of
problems with it. Good luck & let me know if it works for you.

Uninstall NOT delete .
