I know this is asked many times, and I searched for the answer, but is
re-installing the ATI display drivers the best thing to do first? Does
that blow away all vidio drivers? I'm nervous to do that. What exactly
do I do/ what happens step by step when I re-install ATI display
drivers? ( My Directx 8.1 is working fine )
I haven't used the TV in a while, but in the meantime I had put a new
monitor in, a ViewSonic and loaded software that came with it. Could
that have anything to do with it?

It's all in the README file that comes with the drivers, or in the driver
install FAQ at www.ati.com. Read them before going further.

Uninstall everything ATI using the add-remove software control panel in
Windows. Drivers, control panel and MMC.

When you reboot, Windows will detect a new video card and try to install the
drivers automatically. Don't. Cancel back to the desktop and install drivers
first, then contol panel, then MMC.

Afterwards test everything again to make sure it's working properly.

If you're having specific problems, post details and someone will try to
help.

Thanks, I REALLY appreciate your reply. I did read all that. What
scares me is removing the display drivers. After I do that and
re-boot, what is it using for drivers? Just some basic ones? I know
very little about drivers and operating systems ( I have Win98SE), but
they scare me!

There is a good reason to uninstall the old drivers before installing the
new ones. The files Windows is using to run the card at the time may not be
overwritten by newer files of the same name, and you'll wind up with a funky
mix of old and new files that can cause you problems. So uninstall them all
whenever you update.

When you reboot after uninstalling, Windows will detect the card and ask if
you want to install drivers. DON'T. Cancel out and you'll be looking at your
desktop using the standard VGA drivers built into Windows in glorious
640x480, 8-bit color.

Then you just run the ATI installation applets in the order listed in my
first message. After that it's just a matter of restoring your preferred
resolution and refresh rate in display properties.

Man, thanks alot! I feel much better knowing what to expect, now if I
can work up the courage... I'll let you know

Hi, you list 3 things to remove: Drivers, Control panel & MMC. In
add-remove I see 2 things ATI Display Drivers and ATI MultiMedia
center. Is there a third thing somewhere?

My add-remove software control panel lists four ATI apps: drivers, control
panel, MMC and DVD player.

If yours doesn't have them all, don't worry about it. They might never have
been installed in the first place. The drivers can be installed all by
themselves and will work fine.

But I suggest putting on at least the drivers and control panel. The control
panel adds a number of optional tabs to the advanced settings in display
properties that are very useful. It also installs a link to the control
panel in the Windows taskbar, which you can keep if you find it convenient,
or disable if you find it annoying.

MMC is a mixed bag. The DVD player is very good if you use it. Most of the
other stuff is no better than the MS Media Player.

You might want to spend a few minutes reading the Catalyst FAQs at
www.ati.com to get familiar with what is offered and what you really need.

Actually, there's a fifth app, Skid, although it's not listed as ATI: DAO -
shades of Eastern religions!
