Go to this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/default.asp

There are two links for each newsgroup: One goes to the web interface. The
other one will open OE with the server and newsgroup listed in the OE
window. Right click on the group and select Subscribe.

Also, at the top of that page is a link "Windows XP Newsgroup Setup
Instructions." In step 5, you may want to enter a "munged" email address
instead of your real one. Example, I use (e-mail address removed) instead of
(e-mail address removed). Spambots that cruise the newsgroups gathering up emails
will pass over your address and you won't get spammed to death. The DELETE
part added to the address is easy to spot and remove if someone really
wants to get in touch with you.

Finally, for offline reading -- open the Outlook Express help file. Look up
the topics "Synchronize" and "Offline." Once you have this setup, you can
go online. Download the newsgroups that you like to read. Sign off. Read
your groups, write any reponses that you want. The next time you go online,
you can send in those responses and download any new messages too. Until I
had DSL, offline reading was the method I used for perusing the newsgroups
too.

For the ads that keep popping up: If these have "Messenger Service" in the
title bar, apply the XP firewall to your online connection. Or install the
firewall of your choice. Zone Alarm has a free version and a pay version.
Both are quite nice and easy to use.

contact a high school or college near you that may have a computer club.
people are usually more than willing to give hands on help with computer problems.

plus it would give you a good excuse to get out.
