I'm sorry to have to put this in again but I'm really
stuck and desperately need a solution. No one seems to
want to help me!

One of our users is running IE 6 on win2K and (as of about
a month ago) cannot access any external sites.
She is set up like every other user here and has no
problems accessing our intranet (we connect through LAN
proxy).
What's really weird is that when the "detect network
settings" link on the error message page is pressed, IE
picks up its connection and is able to access sites.
I can't see any setting that it is changing and as I say,
she is set up identical to other users in our office & She
used to be able to access sites without this error
not that long ago.

Another user in our office had this problem but he was
using IE 5.5 and an install of IE5.5 SP1 solved the issue.
I have tried re-installing 6.0 but to no avail.

Does anyone know what causes this or how to solve it? Or
even where I would maybe be able to find help? (Because
we have a corporate agreement with MS they will not
provide answers via online support).

Thanks,

Kirsten

Is the computer properly set up for the proxy server?

Yes. She only started getting the problem a little bit
ago. Until then everything was fine. I don't know if
perhaps her version updated to 6.0 recently as most other
users have 5.5
She has the correct LAN settings and can access all our
intranet sites. When she first opens IE you can see in
the bottom of the screen that it has found MSN site & is
waiting for response, then it just stops and says that the
page cannot be displayed. But then when the Autodetect
link on the error page is pressed, IE recognises that
there is a connection there and lets her see internet
pages.
Its got me stumped!

ip configuration does not appear to be issue. I had
previously checked all this (our clients do not have
static IP but configured as DHCP clients). They use proxy
auto-config file downloaded from a linux server running
squid proxy.
But as I say, I do not think the issue is with this but
with this one version of IE in particular.
Did ip release just incase & tested internet again when
new IP had been picked up. I'm afraid it made no
difference.

Progress shows (in bottom bar) as "Detecting proxy",
then "page found, waiting for reply", then "done". When
done appears, page cannot be displayed screen appears. If
auto-detect settings link is pressed, internet page
appears immediately although it would appear that no
settings are changed.

LAN proxy details are entered correctly in LAN settings as
intranet pages cause no issues.

Puzzler eh?!!

Hi Kirsten - On her system, go to %SystemRoot%\System32\etc and look for
HOSTS (no extension - NOT HOSTS.sam) Rename it to NOHOSTS and see if
this affects your problem. If not helped, rename it back to HOSTS (all
caps, no extension). Also, if she's running a local software firewall,
verify that it is set up correctly.

Hi,

That did not work as our users do not use Hosts file to
access internet.

I noticed something v. strange when I was playing about
with IE though. If an intranet site is set to the home
page, then an internet site is entered after it has opened
up, the refresh button will get rid of the page cannot be
displayed screen. However, if an internet site is set as
the home page then refresh will not get rid of the page
cannot be displayed screen, only pressing the Detect
network settings link will.

I think that IE has completely screwed up. Do you know of
any service packs to repair it? If not, how do I
uninstall IE? In the remove programs applet the only
options are to repair or restore.

There appears to be a rather large amount of win2K
hotfixes on her PC. This might have been due to a
previous member of staff (he was a bit service pack happy)
and I think might be what has caused the issue with her
Internet Explorer.

Hi Kirsten - Well, some questions. Is SP4 installed? Is hotfix 818529
installed for IE (look in IE Help|About)? Have you tried to do a Repair
of IE on her machine? Have you tried to do an re-install of IE on her
machine? Can you re-verify that ALL of the proxy, firewall, etc.
settings of her machine are exactly the same on her machine as those on
machines that are OK, to include any ad blocking/privacy settings? Does
she have ANY Norton/Symantec software installed? Does she have any
Popup/Ad Blocking software installed?
