I tried Celestia, but it wasn't so interesting. And it crashed in my

A similar program is Orbiter. Description, screenshots:

The objects in space and on earth look good, like in Celestia, but in
Orbiter you can also jump into a spaceship and drive anywhere in space,
or on earth, because Orbiter can be used as a flight simulator too.

If you handle the gas pedal gently you can stay inside the atmosphere.
The friction against the air means that there is a speed limit in the
atmosphere.
If you want to go faster you just fly higher.

It is actually a very accurate scientific simulation program for serious
use by people who know a lot about space travel, but you can set the
fuel to be unlimited and play around as much as you like.

It is a rather big download though, 36MB for just the minimum system,
and then 100MB of other files you may want.
These extra files contain high resolution data about the surfaces of
planets, monns, and earth.
They also contain extra space ships to choose from.

Installation is easy, copy all parts into a folder you have created
under C:\Program Files named Orbiter, preserving paths from the zip
file.
Deinstallation is even simpler, delete all files and folders under the
Orbiter directory. The program does not write to the registry.
Try the basic installation, 36MB, first, before you add more files.
Read the big pdf file in the doc directory, learn the few most important
keys to control a vehicle.
Choose between different graphics standard settings in the program until
it works well, if you have any problems. A joystick is nice to have but
not necessary.

Every time I exit Celestia on W98se I get :
"CELESTIA caused an invalid page fault .. blah blah", but the OS
continues to work fine.
I could not find out how to move about.
It isn't really possible to flit about, just set orbits and distances,
so this here Orbiter sounds rather interesting ...

(snip details and large download warnings)

I know a man who often has access to enormous bandwidth so I'm sure he
would do me a favour one day .... :-)

Thanks for the pointer!

I wouldn't place a lot of value on this list.

A lot of the programs are unneeded, or at least they
would be if the people posting the list were computer gurus.

For example, I have made my IE-based Web browser. So, I don't
need "priceless pop-up ad blockers." My browser blocks ads.
Why should I need an external program to do it?

Learn how to program. That will be a more useful list.
