Laserjet 1000 printer that will not effing well work no matter what I try. I
have to install the software and then plug the USB cable in, easy hey! BUT

What OS are you using?.. If your using 2k or NT then it should show up, I
THINK that the usb2 drivers for NT are bundled seperatly? (dont quote)..
Also When you plug it in have the printer power off, plug in cable when it
says, then turn on the printer.
I honestly hate the way these new printers install over usb

SP1 installed? [Regardless], locate/highlight each USB controller entry in
Device Manager, (one at a time) and select "Update Driver". Allow XP to
find and install drivers automatically.

Please post a follow-up.

Ron's on the right track. Windows XP also has various USB 2.0 hotfixes. You
should visit MS's website and get the USB 2.0 installer.

At minimium, get SP1 and any relative Windows Updtates. (Critial updates
would be nice too)

What concerns me is the nothing happens. At minimium you should hear the
tone that a USB device is connected. If you don't have speakers, i would
suggest adding some to hear for the plugging in of USB tone.

Thanks for the many kind replies so far. I should have been more specific
sorry so here it goes:

Win XP (Official) with all updates installed.

When I insert the USB cable I get the 'doo-dup' sound then:

An error occured during the installation of this device
The driver installation file for this device is missing a necessary entry.
This may be because the INF was written for Windows 95 or later. Contact
your hardware vendor.

HOWEVER!! this worked fine on the PC upstairs when I installed the same
printer there (I bought 2 x HP LJ1000)

better, try that (upstairs) printer downstairs. who knows you could have a
bad usb interface on the printer, not talking to computer right.

Bobby

yes, you said you had 2 printers, did you try the one that works or doesn't
work on other computer?

Bobby

Hmm. Alex...I too would be interested to learn whether the other printer
works downstairs. In any case, how about this:

- Disconnect the printer and use the uninstall utility (if avail) to remove
the s/w. Then open a prompt, and type this text - minus the parentheses -
followed by ENTER:
{set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1}
{devmgmt.msc}

Then, with the prompt window still open in the background, click on the VIEW
menu in Device Manager and select "Show hidden devices". Then expand the
USB section and look for warnings and/or suspicious duplicates. Delete
anything that seems suspicious - it will re-detect and install on reboot
anyway - and reboot.

Once everything has settled down, open DevMgr in whatever way you usually do
and make sure all USB controllers are running with the most current drivers.
(Since you already have SP1 installed, this will likely be alright anyway).

Then, turn on the printer...THEN attach the USB cable. See what response
you get, and perhaps we can proceed from this point.
