Mr. Frustrated

Thanks for reading and perhaps aiding me with a few
problems:

* How the f--- do you stop pop ups? I have a google
toolbar which lists number of pop ups swatted, but its
batting average is so low, I may have to send it back to
the Minors. ps I'VE TRIED ONE OR TWO PROGRAMS. No Luck.

* Ok, lets say you can't eliminate them, why do they- Pop
Ups- often linger on my screen, even after I've hit them
hard with my entire arsenal of Close, Shift, F1, F2,
etc. Are they from another planet? Do I have to close my
computer to combat them?; I've tried Ctrl, Alt, Delete,
in every permutation possible; I've offered them candy,
money, the use of my 36 room ocean Mansion...to no avail.

* Finally---excuse my sweat---why has my Dell, Windows XP
slowed up to a snails pace? I have DSL service with
Verizon which worked well for a year. But in the last two
months, my Dell has become slower than ever. I'm a good
person.I pay my bills, give to charity, love my wife. Do
I only get one year of good sevice? I treat my computer
weekly to a full Norton cleansing. I have few files. My
computer shows I have alot of capacity. No apparent
memory problem. Does my computer need a two week
vacation? Is there a tenacious virus that attacks AARP
members?

Thanks for any help. HSQ

Any help would be more than welcome..

First, while I understand your frustration, please remember, these are open
forums. Children, women and others who might find your language, even
implied, offensive read these boards so please be careful in the future.

You don't say whether the popups happen while you browsing the Internet or
while you have the browser closed. If they happen, even when you are not
browsing the web, the best and easiest way to stop such popups are with a
firewall. There are several free versions:
www.agnitum.com
www.zonelabs.com
www.sygate.com
http://www.tinysoftware.com/home/tiny2?la=EN
http://www.kerio.com/kerio.html

If they are happening while you have the browser opened, try PopUp Stopper:
www.panicware.com

Note, online popups are set by the sites and the ads on the site.

As to your second issue, again, I'm not sure if you are talking about online
speed or the speed of your system but the first thing you want to do is make
sure your antivirus software is up to date and run a scan of your system.

Also, be sure there is no malware installed on your system. Download,
install and run Ad Aware:
www.lavasoftusa.com Note, the fact you may not have installed such software
is irrelevant, such software can be installed on wittingly when you click
something at a website and might have been installed during the course of
clicking, hitting keys on your keyboard, etc. when you were trying to stop a
popup.

There are basically three types of popups to deal with.

Browser popups which tools like Google Toolbar or Panicware are designed to
deal with. (There are many more)

http://toolbar.google.com/
http://www.panicware.com/

Messenger Service popups can be combated using a personal firewall. Windows
XP has one that is better than nothing. (See Help & Support for " ICF. ") I
personally prefer a third party solution like the free Zone Alarm or any one
of a number of commercial products. You can also turn off Messenger Service
but that is more of a "Band-Aid" solution. Enabling or installing a firewall
is the cure.

The third type are from spy/adware/malware installed on your system. The
following link will help in dealing with that.

I use PopUpCop. I have not seen a pop-up or pop-under ad since I started
using it. It also does some other wonderful things if you so desire.

On the slowdown issue clean up the hard drive, reset the
pagefile to 0 and run the defrag program about three
times. After defrag reset the pagefile back to normal. XP
is bad about fragmenting the hard drive especially if you
install and uninstall programs.

Greetings --

There are at least three varieties of pop-ups, and the solutions
vary accordingly. Which specific type(s) is troubling you?

1) Does the title bar of these pop-ups read "Messenger Service?"

This type of spam has become quite common over the past year or
so, and unintentionally serves as a valid security "alert." It
demonstrates that you haven't been taking sufficient precautions while
connected to the Internet. Your data probably hasn't been compromised
by these specific advertisements, but if you're open to this exploit,
you most definitely open to other threats, such as the Blaster Worm
that still haunts the Internet. Install and use a decent, properly
configured firewall. (Merely disabling the messenger service, as some
people recommend, only hides the symptom, and does little or nothing
to truly secure your machine.) And ignoring or just "putting up with"
the security gap represented by these messages is particularly
foolish.

Stopping Advertisements with Messenger Service Titles
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp

Blocking Ads, Parasites, and Hijackers with a Hosts File
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Whichever firewall you decide upon, be sure to ensure UDP ports
135, 137, and 138 and TCP ports 135, 139, and 445 are _all_ blocked.
You may also disable Inbound NetBIOS (NetBIOS over TCP/IP). You'll
have to follow the instructions from firewall's manufacturer for the
specific steps.

You can test your firewall at:

Symantec Security Check
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/vr_main.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=GPVHGBYNCJEIMXQKCDT

Security Scan - Sygate Online Services
http://www.sygatetech.com/

Oh, and be especially wary of people who advise you to do nothing
more than disable the messenger service. Disabling the messenger
service, by itself, is a "head in the sand" approach to computer
security. The real problem is _not_ the messenger service pop-ups;
they're actually providing a useful, if annoying, service by acting as
a security alert. The true problem is the unsecured computer, and
you've been advised to merely turn off the warnings. How is this
helpful?

2) For regular Internet pop-ups, you might try the free 12Ghosts
Popup-killer from http://12ghosts.com/ghosts/popup.htm, Pop-Up Stopper
from http://www.panicware.com/, or the free Google Toolbar from
http://toolbar.google.com/, which is what I use.

3) To deal with pop-ups caused by any sort of "adware" and/or
"spyware,"such as Gator, Comet Cursors, Xupiter, Bonzai Buddy, or
KaZaA, and their remnants, that you've deliberately (but without
understanding the consequences) installed, two products that are
quite effective (at finding and removing this type of scumware) are
Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search & Destroy from
www.safer-networking.org/. Both have free versions. It's even
possible to use SpyBot Search & Destroy to "immunize" your system
against most future intrusions. I use both and generally perform
manual scans every week or so to clean out cookies, etc.
