I purchased a new eMachines 2 weeks ago and XP worked just fine. For over a
week.
It has 6 months of AOL for free, which I installed and went online with OK,
and I was able to ignore or bypass all the effing security (McAfee and
Norton), as well as eMachine's Big Fix.
However, wishing to access files on my old computer (Win98SE), I first
installed my dsl program, which works fine on the old machine. However, I
got a traffic jam of the above three installations and thought everything
would be OK. However, I find that I have lost the very important desktop (I
am the same person--owner and administrator).
I have tried Fll, just in case I had accidentally set kiosk mode. No soap.
When XP loads, the desktop is there, with all the icons. In addition, the
taskbar loads just fine (Quick Launch, Systray). However, just as it looks
as though I am ready for business, I get the McAfee Security red splash
screen. That disappears, and takes with it the entire desktop (except for
my image).
I am able to access most features of the system by using the Task Manager,
and Run/Browse. Glad that XP shows my basic icons just to the left in the
resulting browse window, so I can go to My Computer, Desktop, etc.
However, the windows I have available are very limited and not sized
properly for ease of use.
I am, for example, trying to register the MS Office 60 day trial, but the
window is so large that I can't read all of it in order to click on
appropriate buttons, etc.
Also, I can't seem to get to the appropriate registration screen for the
trial office. (I am able to use OE for both email and newsgroups, but,
again, there are limitations.
Safemode is, as you know, limited.
However, I did follow the instructions given to another questioner, to open
in Safe Mode, to Run: cmd and type Chkdsk C:/ F and restarted.
That solved no problem for me that I am aware of.
I must have some setting, either in McAfee or My Computer, that turns off my
desktop on loading. I suspect McAfee.
I should add that, per the Big Fix, I have SP2 added and then went on and
added MS Virtual Machine. Could that last be what is doing something bad?
