Hi there.
I have an Athlon XP3000+ and I am trying to remove what I assume is a stock heatsink but cannot see how to. I've looked at several guides online and the heatsinks featured look nothing like mine. Is mine missing some lever or something? How do I remove it? Here's a photo:

There is a bracket retaining the heatsink, it goes through the middle and clips onto a set of three 'lugs' either side of the CPU socket.

One side will have a small opening where you can insert a thin bladed screwdriver.

Insert screwdriver, push down firmly but gently and ease the clip away from the lugs. Raise up the screwdriver, this will free the retaining clip.

Take the clip off of the other side's three lugs and remove heatsink.

Clean CPU core with clean cloth, cotton buds and meths. Also clean surface of heatsink with meths and a clean cloth.

Even better than meths is isopropyl alcohol, if you have any, it's available from chemists.

Just make sure you don't do as many people do (well alright - as I did :D ) and let the screwdriver slip and ruin the motherboard.

ah yes, now then ... haven't we all. ;)

Thankfully we now see a big improvement with the newer MBs & HSF

Ah well ChelseaFC2005, you are not allowed to be a seasoned hardware reparing type person until you've done the following :D
1. Put a screwdriver thru' the motherboard
2. Tried to fit a cpu in 90 degrees out and watch of smoke come off the motherboard (I never did that either - more than once!)
3. Connect the floppy drive power lead one pin across so it's powering thru the earth pin - that produces lots and lots of smoke. I havn't actually done that but I have seen it happen and believe me there is a lot of smoke:)
