Hey, my CPU and Heatink have melted together completely,

What is the best way to sepperate them? a hairdryer?

thanks,

KGB

Did you have a thermal pad on there? That can be VERY sticky - I hope it wasn't the actual CPU melting ;)

You chould be able to warm it up with a hairdryer as you suggest and peel them apart, worked for me :D

(edit, whoops - was instead of wasn't!)

I posted something simulaur about 4 months back, all ya need to do is get a hair dryer on it for abit, till its around 50c-60c, then the thermal pad will become nice and loose enough for you to pull it off. Then to get the crap off, heat the processor with the hairdryer again and use a credit card or simulaur to scrap the goo off.

What do you mean the heatsink melted as well O_O

When i was trying out the delta fan, i turned on the PC but without any fan on the heatsink, lol. I paniced and had to hold the delta fan over the heatsink while i shut down.

noo, the processor didnt melt, just the thermal pad.

i got the pad off, but it sork of wreaked it, can i get a new pad, or do i need a anew heatsink?

Just heat up the heatsink with a hairdryer and scrap the rest of the goo off, then use Artic Silver 5 or a simulaur thermal paste.

All the Thermal pad does is ensure good contact between heatsink and processor.

Overclockers sell it, also a cleaner to get off the old goo - or just google it.

Arctic silver 5 has been ordered... thanks guys, is it reusable? or if i need to take the CPU off the Heatsink, will i need to put more on?

And will it stick to my Processor, because i almost wreaked this one, i didnt realise it had stuck and the processor wripped out with it, i bent a few pins :( i managed to get them back, and none broke off.

Artic Silver 5 is a grease, and is not really sticky, if you have it on your processor you will be able to pull off your fan with ease. But it is recommended that if you do take your heatsink off that you clean off the artic silver and put some fresh stuff on.

You only need to put an extrememly fine amount on, just so you can no longer see the processor shining through, its something like 0.001mm layer!

You'll be suprised how robust CPU's can be KGB, but its important to make sure all the old goo is removed and the surfaces nice and clean before applying the new paste.

You only need to use a small amount - enough to give a thin layer to fill in the imperfections and gaps on the surface, and spread it out using something like a credit card - in the case of thermal paste less is more!

<< just seen your reply Reef, doin mine at the same time - sorry for the duplication!>>

The Paste will come in a injector looking thing, i think. you will get enough to last you a long long time.
