Hi Steve,
NLB unlike MSCS (Cluster service) can run with only a single network card.
This article shows some of the options:
303608 HOW TO: Configure Network Load Balancing Parameters in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=303608
However, in single NIC you still have a heartbeat, NLB unlike MSCS always
uses the adapter where NLB is installed as the heartbeat adapter. When
using a single NIC NLB you must have 2 IP numbers (one dedicated and one
for the Virtual IP [VIP]) and you must use the NLB cluster in multicast
mode. The only problem with this is that some Layer 2 switches do not
operate correctly with multicast and will drop packets, thus we do not
recommend running in multicast mode unless absolutely necessary. You can
also get better through put with a 2 NIC scenario depending on the
application that is being load balanced.
A great deal about how NLB should be configured is what application is
being balanced. And if you tell me more about your layout (network and
planned NLB configuration) I can give more advice and point to more
articles.
