I have attached headphones to my line-out socket and am unable to hear
anything from them. I have loudspeakers attached to the loudspeaker out
jack and a microphone to the microphone jack. The loudspeakers and the
microphone work fine.

The hadphones and mic. work fine on another (win 98) machine.

The volume level for all devices is at max. none of the devices are muted.

In the device manager all devices are working normally.

Can anyone think of any solutions to this problem.

Thanks in anticipation.

Try toggling the "digital out" option to the opposite state - in the
soundcard's control panel. In this Creative Soundblaster card, that
option is accessed by double-clicking the "speaker" icon in the
Notification area (right-side of the Taskbar), then clicking the ADVANCED
button.

The line-out socket is not designed for headphones. It is designed for a
device that has it's own amplifier. Headphones need to be plugged into the
speaker socket. You may be able to get around your problem with amplified
speakers plugged into the line-out and your headphones plugged into the
speaker socket. I've never tried this but it may work.

Unfortunately the advanced option is "greyed out" - any ideas why ?

The "sound card" is an onboard chaintek cmedia device if that's any help.

That is not how it works. You either use the speakers or the
headphones.
This information is in the manual. RTFM

I ended up giving up on flaky drivers, and got speakers with a headphone jack on
the speaker switch. Any controls I can move off the computer are easier for
Windows to handle.
